What you'll do

Mercor is building a library of investment-operations and fund-accounting work products, and each task is a small, self-contained version of a day in middle or back office. You get mock files (ledgers, custodian and bank statements, corporate-action notices) and produce the deliverable an analyst would sign off, which is then graded against a rubric.

The exercise types named in the ad:

  • Reconciliations: ledger versus custodian or bank; isolate and explain every residual break and produce the signed-off rec with adjusting entries
  • NAV attribution: break down NAV movements, flag components outside tolerance and write the variance commentary
  • Trade breaks: investigate a mismatch between two systems, find and classify the root cause, propose the fix and draft the narrative
  • Corporate actions: process events and compute entitlements per account
  • Payment exceptions: decide repair, return or escalate, and match messy merchant and vendor descriptors to a canonical registry

The ad does not say what the library is for. Rubric-graded work products like these are typically used as expert reference data for AI evaluation, but that is our reading, not a statement in the listing.

Who fits

  • 3+ years in fund administration or investment operations: fund accounting, reconciliations, corporate actions, trade support and middle office, or payment operations
  • Experience at a fund administrator, custodian, asset manager or bank operations team
  • Hands-on with recs, NAV, trade breaks, corporate actions or settlement exceptions, plus strong Excel
  • Nice to have: a CPA or IOC; SS&C Geneva, Multifonds or InvestOne; SWIFT and settlement systems
  • United States-based (a hard location requirement)

This is one of the few expert listings that values operations staff rather than front-office or accounting credentials.

The assessment

Expect a practical test mirroring the work: a ledger-versus-custodian reconciliation that has to tie out, a NAV variance attribution, and a trade-break root-cause analysis with narrative. Practise tying out to zero under time pressure before you start it.

What it pays

$75–110 per hour depending on experience, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. At the stated ~15 hours a week, that is roughly $1,125–1,650 a week.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Operations experience earns expert-level rates
  • Light, predictable commitment of about 15 hours a week
  • Very active: Mercor showed 133 hires on this listing this month
  • The assessment is the job itself, so you know what you are signing up for

Less good:

  • US only
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
  • The end use of the work is not stated
  • Contractor terms; projects can be extended, shortened or concluded early
