What you'll do
Each task you build is a small case file: a realistic prompt, a "data room" of supporting material, and a way to grade the answer objectively. You run it against the model, study where it succeeds and fails, and keep tightening until the task genuinely separates strong reasoning from weak.
Per the ad:
- Author tasks drawn from work you have actually done
- Build the data room and the grading criteria
- Run, analyse and iterate until the task discriminates
- Agree with the project lead and other experts what "good" looks like in your field
The data-room format suits people whose real work involves digging through test reports, micrographs, specs and failure data rather than answering textbook questions. A failed-part investigation or a qualification package you once assembled is exactly the kind of raw material this rewards.
Who fits
Senior expertise in one of:
- Materials science: metals, ceramics, composites, characterisation, additive manufacturing
- Electrical engineering: analog, RF, power
- Mechanical engineering: design, CFD and fluids, heat transfer, pressure vessels, NDE, CAE
Plus:
- Comfort with ambiguity; the ad says much of the work is still being defined and shaping it is part of the role
- The ability to explain why a wrong answer is wrong, not just what the right one is
No degree, years of experience or credential is specified; "senior expertise" is the only bar.
What it pays
$60–90 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. The same band as the Engineering Simulation Specialist listing, which covers overlapping electrical and mechanical ground with a Python-simulation format instead of data rooms.
Support
Daily onboarding sessions and several office hours every day, more support than most Mercor listings describe.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Materials scientists are the headline audience, which is rare among engineering evaluation listings
- Heavy onboarding and daily office hours
- You help define the project as well as execute it
Less good:
- Only 2 hired this month, so the project may be small or early
- "Still being defined" means shifting guidelines
- No hours or duration published; placement in the $30 band is not explained
- Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
