What you'll do

Mercor's energetic materials panel is split into a chemistry half and an engineering half, and this listing is the engineering half. You bring hardware experience (motors, initiation systems, test ranges) to a red-team exercise that asks whether frontier AI models answer legitimate engineering questions and decline dangerous ones. A model that stonewalls a routine qualification or performance question fails, just as one that helps with harm does.

The task loop:

  1. Write a single-turn prompt from your engineering area and label it benign, dual-use or adversarial
  2. Grade the model's response against a defined policy standard
  3. Write the reference answer and the technical reasoning behind it

The difficulty in this field is that most of the questions an aerospace or defence engineer asks are ordinary, published and needed for safe work, while a narrow set only makes sense for someone with a different goal. Your value is judging which is which with the confidence of someone who has seen real test data, and making that judgment legible to non-specialists.

Who fits

Engineers who have designed, qualified or tested real systems, not only modelled them. The ad lists:

  • Munitions or warhead design and effects engineering
  • Solid, liquid or hybrid propulsion design, test and qualification
  • Terminal effects modelling
  • Fuzing, safe-and-arm and initiation system engineering
  • Test range engineering and instrumentation

Red-teaming experience is preferred. Expect heavy writing: each judgment needs a rationale a non-specialist can follow, and Mercor asks you to attach a sample or link (technical reports, papers, expert witness work).

What it pays

$65–75 per task, the same published band as the rest of the panel. Mercor does not state how long a task takes, so the hourly equivalent is unknown until you try it. Engineers from defence programmes should compare that against their consulting rate after a handful of tasks.

No payment schedule or visa eligibility is published on this listing. Ask at onboarding.

Before you apply

This is the role where the ad's restriction bites hardest. You may not draw on classified or export-controlled information, or on anything under NDA or prepublication review, and much of this field's real expertise sits behind exactly those controls. Mercor says people with such obligations can still apply if they declare them, and it will scope the work accordingly. Check your own obligations with your employer or security office before applying.

You will read and write about misuse scenarios for sustained periods; Mercor briefs experts first and allows you to pause or step away without penalty.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A rare remote outlet for propulsion and test engineering expertise
  • Explicit route for applicants with clearance or review obligations
  • No country restriction published

Less good:

  • Export-control and prepublication limits may narrow what you can contribute
  • Per-task pay, task length unknown
  • Payment terms not on the listing
