What you'll do
Mercor's own umbrella nuclear ad calls safeguards and nonproliferation experience "the strongest signal", and this is the listing that recruits it directly. Inspectors and accountancy analysts verify that declared material is where it should be, and resolve the discrepancies when it is not. The panel uses that experience to test whether frontier AI models answer routine accountancy and verification questions fully and decline those aimed at defeating verification. Refusing a standard accountancy question counts as a failure.
Each task:
- Write a single-turn prompt from safeguards practice, labelled benign, dual-use or adversarial
- Judge the model's reply against a defined policy standard
- Write the reference answer, with the reasoning behind it
Inspectors are used to reading declarations sceptically and asking why a figure looks the way it does. That habit is what the red-team work needs: recognising when a question about balances or measurement uncertainty is ordinary operator practice and when it has another purpose.
Who fits
People who have verified nuclear material in the field. The ad lists:
- IAEA, Euratom or SSAC/RSAC inspector: planning, verification, reporting
- Material accountancy: declarations, inventory change reports, MUF evaluation
- Additional Protocol implementation
- Safeguards instrumentation and containment/surveillance
- Safeguards-by-design or safeguards policy work at a laboratory, regulator or ministry
Red-teaming experience is preferred. Inspection reports are usually confidential, so pick a writing sample you are free to share, such as a published paper or conference contribution.
What it pays
$65–75 per task, the same published band as the rest of the nuclear panel. The ad gives no task length.
This panel publishes no payment schedule or visa eligibility terms on this listing, so confirm both before you begin.
Before you apply
No classified or export-controlled information, and nothing under NDA or prepublication review. International organisation staff and alumni typically have continuing confidentiality obligations; declare them in your application, and Mercor says it will scope the work accordingly.
The work involves sustained reading and writing about misuse scenarios. Mercor briefs experts first and allows you to pause or step away without penalty.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Mercor names this background as the panel's strongest signal
- Open to state-system inspectors and policy staff, not only IAEA alumni
- No country restriction published
Less good:
- Confidentiality duties from inspection work may limit what you can draw on
- Per-task pay with no stated task length
- Payment terms not on the listing
