What you'll do
This is a knowledge-gathering listing rather than an ongoing role. Mercor wants to hear, in your own words, how practitioners think about search quality now that retrieval increasingly feeds LLMs and agents.
The format:
- A 25-minute conversational interview. No coding and no take-home. You talk through how you measure search quality, how you evaluate changes, and the trade-offs you have actually made. The ad asks for war stories, "the messier and more specific, the better"
- If your interview stands out, a paid 30-minute live conversation with the team, for $200, paid when the call is complete
Mercor says it reviews every submission.
Who fits
The ad describes someone who has probably:
- Owned relevance or retrieval on a system real users depended on
- Decided how to quantify impact and improvements on it
- Built parts of an agentic search system
- Scaled the data infrastructure behind modern search
Engineers from classic search (ranking, query understanding, learning-to-rank) who have since moved into retrieval for RAG or agents are exactly the profile. If your search work was mainly configuring an off-the-shelf engine, you will find it hard to produce the specifics this conversation rewards.
What it pays
Mercor lists the role at $80–150 per task. The ad text itself only spells out one figure, the $200 for the follow-up call; it does not say what "per task" covers or whether the first 25-minute interview is paid. Clarify that before you invest time.
Payment terms are not published on the listing.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Low effort to try: one 25-minute conversation, no coding
- $200 for 30 minutes if you are invited to the follow-up
- Rewards real experience rather than interview prep
Less good:
- What the $80–150 per task covers is not explained
- Not an ongoing engagement as described; any follow-on work is not mentioned
- Nothing about who uses the insights, or for what, beyond the LLM and agents context
- Payment method and timing are not stated
