What you'll do
The job is data collection. You mount a 360° or wide-angle action camera above and behind yourself on a backpack rig or harness with an extension arm, angle it slightly down, and record continuous clips of yourself going about real activities: walking through changing environments, indoor and outdoor activities, everyday tasks, and vehicle navigation with the camera fixed to the car. The ad also mentions animal-mounted POV recordings among the capture types, without saying more about them.
The footage is judged on framing as much as content. Your whole body has to stay in shot during normal movement, the surroundings have to stay visible, and each clip must run at least 60 seconds at 720p or better. The point of the dataset is continuous movement and natural navigation, so a clip of you standing still in one room is unlikely to be what they want.
What you need
- A compatible camera you already own or can use: at least 170° field of view and 720p recording. The ad names Insta360 X3 to X6, DJI Osmo 360 and GoPro MAX / MAX2 as examples
- A third-person mount (backpack, harness or similar rig with an extension arm or pole). You do not need to own one to apply
- A secure vehicle mount if you take on driving tasks
- The discipline to follow per-task camera positions and safety instructions exactly
The ad rules out handheld selfie sticks, chest mounts, shoulder clips and tripods: none of them give the trailing viewpoint the dataset needs. If your camera is below 360°, the rig has to sit far enough back to keep your full body and the environment in frame, which in practice means a longer arm.
What it pays
$20 per hour of approved video. That is an hour of footage that passes quality review and is accepted for delivery, not an hour of your time.
Budget for the gap between the two. Setup, travel to interesting locations, retakes, clips cut short when you left the frame, and anything rejected in review are all unpaid. The ad does not publish an acceptance rate or a weekly minimum.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No editing or annotation skill needed; the job is capturing clean footage
- 100 openings and a "high demand" flag
- Reasonable costs for required mounting hardware may be reimbursed, and already owning a mount can get you started sooner
- The rate is stated plainly, along with what counts toward it
Less good:
- You must already own or have access to a qualifying camera, which is a few hundred dollars of kit if you do not
- Pay counts approved footage only; rejected clips and setup time earn nothing
- Reimbursement is "may be", with no cap or process described
- Wearing a rig in public and filming while driving carry obvious practical and safety considerations, and the ad leaves the specifics to the collection instructions
- Start date depends on equipment shipping time
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
