What you'll do

This is statute work, not return preparation. An AI system is turning US sales and use tax law into a formal, machine-checkable translation, and your job is to decide what a correct translation has to contain.

The loop runs like this. You take a section of a state statute (occasionally a federal provision) and break it into a checklist of discrete requirements, written from the statute text alone and before you look at the AI's attempt. Each requirement gets a severity: critical, secondary or minor, weighted by what actually matters in the law rather than marking everything critical. Then you read the AI's translation and score it pass/fail against your own checklist, paying attention to conditions, thresholds, AND/OR logic, defined terms and exceptions.

Where it fails, you write self-contained test scenarios, edge cases included, with explicit facts, dates, amounts and the expected outcome. You also flag real ambiguities in the law as ambiguities rather than forcing an answer. Everything is submitted as structured written evaluations on a review platform.

The skill that matters most is one the ad states plainly: another reviewer should reach the same conclusion from your criteria. If your checklists are precise enough to be applied by a stranger, you are the person they want.

Who qualifies

  • An active CPA licence, a Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a US tax attorney
  • A proven ability to read and interpret tax statutes and regulations, not only prepare returns
  • Comfort with legal logic: conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions and defined terms
  • Precise written communication and close attention to "except for" clauses
  • Comfort giving structured feedback through a digital review interface

Sales and use tax or broader state and local tax (SALT) statutory experience is strongly preferred. No prior AI experience is needed.

Nice to have

  • Experience across several state tax jurisdictions
  • Enrolled Agent status, or federal tax experience relevant to the scenario-review side of the work
  • Prior work reviewing AI or technology-driven tax content
  • A background training teams or writing feedback on legal or tax language

What it pays

$20–30/hour, micro1's published figure for this listing. That is low for a credential this specific: a licensed CPA or CA reading statutes at subsection level would normally bill well above it.

micro1 also runs a sibling listing, U.S based Accountant (CPA/CA), with the same description, the same skills and the same ten openings at $65–70/hour. The ads do not explain the gap. The most likely reading is that the two draw from different geographies, but neither ad says so, so if you are US-based, look at both before applying to this one.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Genuinely interesting work for anyone who enjoys statutory interpretation more than compliance filing
  • Chartered Accountants are admitted alongside CPAs, which widens the door beyond the US
  • The rubric-first method (write the checklist before seeing the AI's answer) is sound practice and a skill that transfers
  • No AI experience required

Less good:

  • $20–30/hour is well below what the credential commands, and a near-identical sibling pays $65–70
  • No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length stated
  • Subsection-level SALT reading is slow, exacting work; expect a steep first week
  • Contract engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
  • The customer is not named
