What you'll do
You are building a training library for an AI that works with CAD. The ad describes producing a varied collection of mechanical parts, assemblies and features in FreeCAD, each one a clean parametric model that reflects how real engineers design.
- Modelling and editing precise parametric parts and assemblies in FreeCAD
- Applying GD&T so the models carry realistic tolerancing
- QA reviews of CAD data: spotting and fixing discrepancies
- Turning feedback into revisions as requirements shift
- Documenting workflows and design decisions so the dataset is reproducible
- Optionally, Python scripting inside FreeCAD to automate modelling or vary parameters
Dataset work rewards breadth and consistency more than one hero part. Expect to model many ordinary components well rather than a few complex ones.
Who fits
- Two or more years in mechanical design, CAD modelling, manufacturing or industrial engineering, with FreeCAD or an equivalent parametric tool
- Strong parametric modelling and design practice
- CAD validation and GD&T applied to real manufacturing
- Knowledge of common manufacturing processes
- Clear engineering documentation
If your experience is in SolidWorks, Fusion or Inventor, the ad accepts "equivalent" software, but the deliverables are FreeCAD, so be ready to show you can work in it. Python is a genuine advantage given the option to script.
What it pays
$40–100/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation mechanism, hours or duration are stated. For comparison, micro1's CAM Programmer listing in the same manufacturing space pays $80–120 but asks for five years.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 50 openings with a two-year experience bar
- Open-source toolchain, so no expensive licence needed
- Optional Python scripting to automate the modelling
Less good:
- A 2.5x spread with no stated basis for placement
- FreeCAD-specific output may slow people from commercial CAD backgrounds
- No hours, duration or pay mechanism published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
