What you'll do
You are writing an exam, one assembly at a time. Each task hands you a complex multi-part CAD assembly in native FreeCAD format. You work out what it is for and how its parts relate, then author several technical questions about it, each with a single exact answer.
The hard constraint is that the questions must be objective and non-guessable. A question a model could answer from general knowledge, or one with two defensible answers, is a failed question. Good ones hinge on details you can only get by actually reading the assembly: which part constrains which, what a feature is there to do, how the mechanism behaves. Coverage matters too, so the set for each assembly should span structure, function and relationships rather than circle one feature.
There is a light feedback loop with project coordinators on how the process can improve.
Who fits
- A background in mechanical engineering, aerospace or industrial design, with solid CAD fundamentals
- Confidence reading multi-part assembly drawings, technical documentation and CAD files
- A track record writing technical documentation, assessment material or similar structured content
- Precise written English and close attention to detail
- Familiarity with FreeCAD or a similar CAD environment (FreeCAD itself is a plus, not a requirement)
- The ability to work independently and hit deliverables
The ad names no degree and no minimum years. Anyone who has set engineering exam questions or written test procedures will recognise the core skill.
What it pays
$40–80/hour, micro1's published band, with no compensation structure stated. Whether that buys your time or is a per-question equivalent is not said, which matters because question-writing speed varies widely. Compare micro1's Mechanical Design / CAD Expert listing, which pays $60–130 but asks for five years of production design and pays per accepted task.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Fifty openings and a high-demand flag
- No stated degree or years-of-experience floor
- FreeCAD experience is optional; SolidWorks, Creo or Inventor users can transfer
- Question design is intellectually engaging work compared with bulk labelling
Less good:
- Writing questions that are both exact and non-guessable is harder than it sounds, and rejected questions may cost you time
- FreeCAD's interface is unfamiliar to many commercial-CAD users; budget time to learn it
- No pay structure, weekly hours or project length published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
