What you'll do

You are recording audio for a speech dataset. The customer is developing AI models and needs Mandarin audio recorded to a professional standard: high fidelity, minimal room noise, and consistent enough across sessions that a model can learn from it.

The work runs from setup to delivery. You prepare and tune your recording space, record according to project specifications, and deliberately vary your delivery: the ad asks for a diverse range of vocal samples, tones and pronunciations, so reading everything in one comfortable register is not the brief. You then edit, check each file against technical and linguistic standards, and keep organised records of what you delivered.

Expect revision rounds. The ad asks for prompt responses to feedback and incorporating changes, which on audio projects usually means re-recording takes that fail a noise or pronunciation check.

Who fits

  • A native Mandarin speaker with clear, accurate pronunciation
  • Around three years of professional recording work: studio sessions, voice-over, narration or similar
  • Comfort with professional recording equipment and editing software, and a room you can make quiet
  • An ear for detail on both sides, the vocal delivery and the technical setup
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication with the project team

Prior work on AI data collection or linguistic resources is a plus but not required. The qualifications are listed as preferred rather than mandatory, but one practical requirement is firm: you need your professional audio equipment available during the interview.

What it pays

$20–40/hour, micro1's published band. The top is double the floor, and the ad does not say what decides placement. It sits $4 above the ceiling of micro1's Mandarin transcription listings, which reflects the equipment and studio skill this one expects. No payment schedule is published.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Voice-over artists and narrators with a home studio can use existing kit and skills directly
  • 25 openings
  • No AI experience needed
  • Remote, with no country restriction stated

Less good:

  • The equipment is on you, and an interview-day audio check means a weak setup ends the application early
  • The $20 floor is low for someone with three years of professional studio experience
  • The ad does not say whether pay is per hour of recording, per hour of finished audio, or per accepted file, and on recording projects that difference is large
  • No weekly hours, project length or volume of recording are stated
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
  • The customer is not named
