What you'll do

Mercor is recruiting Mandarin speakers to quality-check speech data for Amazon's Sonic project. You audit other people's work rather than create your own, across two collections:

  • Multilingual Transcription Audit: play a recording of human or agent speech, compare it to the annotator's transcript, tag every applicable error code, give a pass or fail, and justify it in a short written rationale
  • Forced Alignment Audit: review segments that an automatic aligner has cut at word level, checking each start and end time and the reference text; you correct boundaries, split or merge segments, add missing ones and remove any with no word in them

Mandarin makes the alignment side especially interesting. Written Chinese has no spaces, so what counts as a "word" for a segment depends on the rulebook's segmentation convention, and you need to apply it identically every time. Tone sandhi, neutral tones, erhua and near-homophones also make it easy for an annotator to write a plausible but wrong character, which is exactly what the transcription audit is meant to catch.

The ad puts both collections at 5.00 audit hours per task and asks for a written reason behind every judgment. A short calibration phase precedes production.

Who qualifies

  • Native or near-native Mandarin Chinese as spoken in mainland China: born and raised there, or fully fluent after five or more years living in such a region. This is a hard requirement per the ad.
  • Strong English reading and writing, since the rulebook, error codes and your rationales are in English
  • Consistent application of written standards over hundreds of calls; transcription, subtitling, localisation, annotation or QA experience is a strong signal
  • An ear for similar sounds and word boundaries in continuous speech

Nice to have: AI annotation or evaluation work, phonetics or linguistics, waveform tools.

No current residence requirement is stated, so this listing has no country restriction.

What it pays

$21.50 per hour, published by Mercor. Among the nine Sonic audit languages that puts Chinese second from the bottom, above Hindi ($18) and below Korean and Portuguese ($25), Japanese ($37.50), Italian and Spanish ($39.50), and French and German ($41.50). The ad gives no reason for the spread.

Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Reviewer-level work that builds a transferable audit skill set
  • Clear, rule-based standards rather than subjective rating
  • Remote and self-scheduled

Less good:

  • Less than half what the European language versions pay for the same brief
  • Stripe and Wise payouts are not straightforward from mainland China, so confirm you can receive them before applying
  • Detailed English rationales for every task
  • Hours and duration are not stated; contractor terms apply
