What you'll do

This is drawing-office work aimed at an AI rather than a shop floor. You take design requirements and turn them into manufacturable CAD: detailed 2D drawings and 3D models in the commercial tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, NX), with FreeCAD used for reference models. Every deliverable carries proper dimensioning, tolerancing and GD&T.

Around the models sits a lot of writing. You document manufacturing processes and design intent, explain decisions clearly, and review existing engineering documentation to make it clearer and more manufacturable. Design for manufacture is a recurring thread: the ad asks you to optimise parts for real production, not just draw them correctly.

The likely use is teaching models to read and produce engineering drawings that a machinist could actually work from, which is exactly where current models are weakest.

Who fits

  • Extensive industry experience in mechanical design, with parts you have taken from concept through to manufacture
  • Expert CAD across several platforms, not just one
  • Enough hands-on FreeCAD to open and interpret reference models
  • Strong drafting standards, GD&T and tolerancing
  • A working knowledge of manufacturing processes, material selection and DFM
  • Clear written and spoken communication, and constructive feedback in a remote team

These are listed as preferred qualifications, but the bar they describe is a practising senior designer. No degree, years or location requirement is stated, and no AI experience is needed.

What it pays

$40–80/hour, micro1's published band. For the experience described, the top of that band is modest by engineering-consulting standards, and the bottom is low. The ad does not say what places you in it, whether pay is hourly or per deliverable, or how many hours are on offer.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The work turns on real engineering judgment: GD&T, DFM, material choice
  • Multi-platform CAD users are the target, so breadth pays off
  • "High demand" badge on a newly posted listing

Less good:

  • The pay ceiling is low for the seniority the ad describes
  • Commercial CAD licences are not mentioned; check whether you are expected to supply your own
  • Only 10 openings
  • No hours, duration or pay mechanism published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal on 25 September 2026 and read the next day. The band, the 10 openings, the tool list and the qualifications are micro1's own text. micro1's Mechanical CAD Expert listing runs on the same $40–80 band but is different work: writing Q&A sets about existing FreeCAD assemblies rather than producing drawings and models yourself.
