What you'll do
You write the kind of problem a technician faces on a real test floor and make an AI solve it. Each task is built around a workflow such as setting up a test, choosing instrumentation, collecting data or diagnosing a failure, and comes with the supporting material you would actually have: test logs, calibration records, sensor outputs, failure reports.
You source or construct those datasets from realistic lab or production scenarios, then define the correct path through them: how the data should be read and what the sensible next step is. Each task gets a grading rubric of 35 or more items covering instrumentation logic, data interpretation and failure analysis, written so that both AI graders and human experts can use it.
The ad insists on professional realism, explicitly beyond "simplified textbook examples". A good task here is one where the obvious reading of the data is wrong.
Who fits
- At least 4 years hands-on in lab, test or production settings in mechanical engineering technology
- An associate degree or recognised trade credential in mechanical engineering technology or a related field
- Deep experience with instrumentation, sensors, DAQ systems and prototype testing
- Strong technical documentation of procedures, results and failure modes
- Good at interpreting complex data and diagnosing equipment or process failures
- Comfortable with CSVs, spreadsheets and PDFs as working formats
- Able to work independently to a high standard
No AI experience is needed, and notably no bachelor's degree is asked for.
What it pays
$30–70/hour as published, but pay is output-based: you are paid per task that meets the specifications, and there is a weekly minimum number of tasks. The per-task fee and the minimum are not published. With a 35-item rubric on every task, early tasks will take a while.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Values technician experience and trade credentials directly, which few AI training roles do
- No bachelor's degree required
- 50 openings, flagged as high demand
- Fast start: micro1 says roles fill within 48 hours and first tasks begin 24–48 hours after onboarding
Less good:
- Per-task pay with an unpublished weekly minimum
- Building realistic datasets and long rubrics is time-consuming
- Wide band with no placement criteria
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
