What you'll do
This is annotation and dataset work for deal lawyers. You analyse and annotate M&A and corporate law scenarios that will be used to train a model, research M&A, private equity and related litigation questions, and review and refine datasets so they are legally accurate and reflect how deals really run.
Much of the value is in written commentary: explaining the reasoning behind a transaction structure, what a piece of deal documentation is doing, and where a scenario gets the law or the market practice wrong. You also join remote project discussions, take part in iterative quality assurance, and help develop evaluation rubrics and best practices when asked.
Compared with micro1's Litigation Associate Attorney (BigLaw Firms) listing on the same band, this one is more honestly titled: the work is transactional and says so, with litigation appearing only as corporate or deal-related exposure.
Who fits
- A JD from an accredited US law school and active bar admission in the United States
- M&A practice at an Am Law 100 or other leading US firm
- An extensive track record in M&A transactions, private equity and corporate advisory work
- Strong exposure to litigation, particularly in corporate or transactional contexts
- The ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly across disciplines
- Research, drafting and transaction-document review experience
- Comfort with remote collaboration tools and a high bar for detail
No AI experience is required. No minimum number of years is stated. The location is "Remote" with no country named; US bar admission is a credential here, not a residence rule.
What it pays
$140–400/hour. The ceiling is among the highest on the board and the floor is still strong for contract legal work, but a $260 band with no published placement criteria is closer to a negotiation than a rate. Plan around the floor. The listing has no compensation-structure section, so hourly versus per-task is not stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A very high ceiling for annotation and commentary work
- 99 openings, flagged high demand
- The title matches the work, unlike its litigation-titled sibling
- Deal lawyers' judgement about structure and documentation is what is being paid for
- No AI background needed
Less good:
- Am Law 100 or equivalent is a pedigree filter that excludes strong regional and in-house M&A lawyers
- A $260-wide band with no stated basis for placement
- Asking for "strong litigation exposure" from deal lawyers is an unusual combination; ask how much it weighs
- No pay mechanism, weekly hours, start date or project length stated
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
