What you'll do
Regulatory work is the variant of Mercor's senior-lawyer evaluation series with the widest subject spread. Rather than one practice area, the ad lists five regulated sectors: financial services, healthcare and FDA, antitrust and competition, data privacy and cybersecurity, and environmental and energy regulation. Your scenarios test whether an AI system can handle a compliance program build, an agency investigation or enforcement action, or a rulemaking and comment process the way senior regulatory counsel would.
For each world you write:
- The scenario itself, set in a regulated company or in front of an agency
- Reference work: compliance memoranda, regulatory filings and enforcement response documents
- A rubric that tells real regulatory judgment apart from the kind of answer a well-read law student could give
Scenarios can involve regulatory tracking platforms, compliance management systems and agency filing systems. Worlds target one of two tracks:
- US: the Administrative Procedure Act plus agency-specific statutes and rules (SEC, FDA, FTC among them)
- International: EU regulations and directives, and UK regulatory frameworks
Who fits
- 5+ years as a regulatory attorney or compliance counsel at a major law firm, regulated company or government agency; the ad cites Covington & Burling, Sidley Austin and WilmerHale, or in-house regulatory counsel at a bank, pharma or tech company
- Direct ownership of compliance programs, agency interactions or enforcement matters
- A working grasp of administrative process and how agency rulemaking really proceeds
A JD with bar admission or an international equivalent is strongly preferred; prior rubric, training or compliance documentation authorship helps. Former agency staff are explicitly in scope, which helps if you have moved from government into private practice.
What it pays
$90–100 per hour, matching the rest of the series. The ad gives no weekly hours or duration. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Broad sector list, so specialists in less common regimes (energy, privacy) have a place
- Government agency experience counts alongside firm and in-house work
- International track for EU and UK regulatory lawyers; no residence requirement stated
Less good:
- No hires figure was shown on this listing, so its activity level is unclear
- Rate sits below private-practice regulatory billing
- No hours or duration published; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- Independent contractor
