What you'll do

The subject matter is classic microbiology: how bacteria, fungi and algae develop, look and behave; how microorganisms relate to disease; and how antibiotics and other agents affect microbial populations. The AI work built on top of that is evaluation and documentation. You use rubrics and set criteria to assess data quality, write up findings and processes clearly enough to become training material, and give written and spoken expert input on microbial phenomena.

Of micro1's three bench-science listings on this band, this one is the most evaluation-flavoured: rubric use appears in the responsibilities themselves rather than only as a nice-to-have. Medical and clinical microbiologists are the most obvious fit given the disease and antimicrobial emphasis, though environmental and industrial backgrounds match the algae and fungi coverage.

Who fits

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in biology, microbiology, chemistry or a related field
  • Extensive knowledge of bacterial, fungal and algal systems
  • Expertise in microbial structure and physiology
  • Clear written and spoken communication for interdisciplinary work
  • Comfort working independently and fully remotely
  • Nice to have: rubric development in science or education, prior AI or annotation work in biology, a master's or PhD

What it pays

$70–90/hour, micro1's published band, matching its Biologist and Chemistry Specialist listings. Unlike the Biologist role, no specialised technique (such as CRISPR) is demanded here, which makes this the more accessible of the three for general microbiologists. No pay structure, hours or duration are stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A bachelor's degree qualifies on paper
  • Broad microbiology scope, no single technique required
  • 100 openings, flagged high demand
  • A narrow, predictable band

Less good:

  • Verbal input is mentioned, so expect some live interaction
  • No hours, duration or pay mechanism published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
  • The customer is not named
