What you'll do
This covers the whole electronics build chain, from data to die. At the front you review PCB CAM and Gerber files for manufacturability and compliance. In the middle you apply IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 to board assemblies and wire harnesses, and analyse SMT and AOI defects, including the AOI false calls that eat so much line time.
At the back end the work gets more forensic: counterfeit component detection to AS6081, and semiconductor package inspection with C-SAM and X-ray, down to die inspection and MIL-STD-883 checks. The findings go into written reports and spoken explanations, and you work with project leads on how the training data sets and workflows are shaped.
For anyone who has spent years explaining to a line why a joint fails class 3, the job is doing that explanation carefully enough that a model can learn from it.
Who fits
- Eight or more years in electronics quality, CAM engineering or failure analysis, in PCB assembly, wire harness or semiconductor packaging
- Deep knowledge of IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620; IPC CIS or CIT certification is strongly preferred
- Gerber review and PCB CAM software experience
- SMT process knowledge and practical AOI false call reduction
- Hands-on counterfeit screening to AS6081
- C-SAM and X-ray inspection experience with MIL-STD-883 familiarity
- Clear writing for both technical and non-technical readers
No prior AI work is required.
What it pays
$70–120/hour, micro1's published band. That sits in the middle of its current industrial listings. How pay is calculated, weekly hours and project length are not published.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 30 openings, the joint-largest of micro1's current industrial roles, and flagged high demand
- Rewards failure analysis and counterfeit screening experience, which rarely has an outlet like this
- IPC certification is preferred, not a gate
- Remote; US residence preferred, not required
Less good:
- Very broad: few engineers cover CAM, IPC inspection, counterfeit detection and C-SAM equally, and the ad does not say what the split is
- MIL-STD-883 and AS6081 lean toward US defense supply chains
- Pay mechanics, hours and duration not stated
- The customer is not named
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
