What you'll do
You read NDT data and call it. The material is real inspection data: radiographs, ultrasonic and phased array scans, magnetic particle and penetrant indications, and at times thermography or remote visual inspection footage.
For each case you give a disposition against the relevant acceptance criteria (ASME Section V, API 510 and 653 are named in the scope) and a written or spoken evaluation of why. Ambiguous indications are resolved asynchronously with other technical reviewers, and you contribute to how the project's protocols evolve.
What makes this valuable for AI training is the same thing that makes a good Level III: knowing which indication is relevant, which is geometry, and exactly which clause decides it.
Who fits
- Active ASNT or ISO 9712 Level II or III certification in RT, UT/PAUT, MT or PT
- At least eight years directly interpreting NDT data in oil and gas, petrochemical or power
- Working knowledge of ASME Section V, VIII and XI, API 510, 570 and 653, API 1104 and AWS D1.1
- Confidence making nuanced accept/reject calls against code
- Strong technical writing, and the discipline to work objectively alone
Thermography or RVI experience is a plus. No AI background is needed. ISO 9712 is accepted alongside ASNT, which opens the door to inspectors certified outside the US.
What it pays
$70–110/hour, micro1's published band. The ad does not describe pay mechanics, weekly hours or duration. The ceiling is lower than micro1's metallurgist and aviation inspector roles, though the $70 floor is above most of its other industrial listings.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 30 openings, the joint-largest of micro1's current industrial set, flagged high demand
- ISO 9712 counts, not just ASNT
- Real inspection data, not synthetic puzzles, according to the ad
- Remote; US residence preferred, not required
Less good:
- An active Level II/III certification is listed first among the qualifications, so lapsed inspectors may struggle
- Sector experience is scoped to oil and gas, petrochemical and power; aerospace NDT is not mentioned
- Pay mechanics, hours and duration not stated
- The client is described only as running a critical engineering project
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
