  • application security

What you'll do

You design problems for AI coding models to fail at. Each task is a realistic, challenging piece of software work (implementing a feature or fixing a bug) together with a deterministic verifier: tests that accept any reasonable valid solution and reject everything else.

The verifier is the hard part. Too strict and it rejects a correct solution written differently from yours; too loose and a model passes by hard-coding the expected output. Getting that boundary right is what separates a useful task from a noisy one, and it draws on the same instincts as good code review.

Who fits

  • Strong backend experience in Java, Node.js, Go, Rust, TypeScript, Python, C++ or similar
  • A track record of building scalable services and APIs
  • Comfort with debugging, performance work and automated testing
  • Solid code review instincts
  • Grounding in algorithms, data structures and CS fundamentals

A cybersecurity or SecOps background is called out as a big plus: secure coding, appsec, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, OWASP/CWE or security-focused reviews. If you have that, lead with it in the screening answers.

No prior AI experience is required.

What it pays

$30–100/hour is the published band, but pay is output-based: per task that meets the project specification, with a minimum number of tasks per week (the number is not given). Time per task depends on your experience and workflow, so your effective hourly rate is your acceptance rate times your speed. The floor of $30 is low for senior backend work; ask what a typical task pays and takes before committing.

Commitment and process

  • About 15 hours a week, on a schedule you choose, weekends included if you like
  • Screening questions, a roughly 30-minute AI interview, a technical assessment (marked tentative) and a hiring manager review
  • The ad asks that interviews and assessments be done without outside assistance, and the same on the project itself: your own judgment is the product
  • micro1 says it usually fills roles within 48 hours and expects first tasks within 24–48 hours of onboarding

How it compares

micro1 also lists a Senior Software Engineer role at $245–280/hour that evaluates AI-generated code and asks for experience at a top technology company. This one is a different project: a lower and wider band, no employer-pedigree requirement, 300 openings, and the work is authoring tasks and verifiers rather than reviewing model output.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • 300 openings, flagged high demand, posted within the last week
  • Flexible hours around a day job
  • No big-tech pedigree required
  • Security experience is actively valued

Less good:

  • Per-task pay with an unstated weekly minimum; rejected tasks are unpaid
  • A $30 floor for senior-level work
  • A technical assessment may be added to the process
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage
