Skills
  • open source
  • python
  • c++
  • java
  • rust
  • typescript
  • competitive programming
  • codebase refactoring

What you'll do

You do the kind of work a strong open source contributor already does, inside existing public codebases: implement new features, chase down complex bugs, and refactor legacy code for performance, readability and scale. Work spans Python 3, Java, Rust, C++ and TypeScript.

Each contribution comes with a write-up explaining the design and implementation, and you take part in validating code for accuracy, consistent output and good practice. You also review others' proposed changes and keep project documentation current. The ad leans on competitive programming: some problems call for algorithmic technique rather than just knowing the codebase.

Who fits

  • Expert-level proficiency in at least two of Python, C++, Java, Rust, TypeScript, Go or C#
  • Substantial open source experience, especially features, bug fixes and refactoring
  • Competitive programming experience and comfort analysing hard problems
  • The ability to read tangled constraints and see more than one way through
  • Precise technical writing
  • Careful code review and validation habits
  • Independence, and comfort shipping documented code to deadlines

No prior AI experience is required.

What it pays

$50–100/hour is the band, but compensation is output-based: per task that meets the project specifications, with a minimum number of tasks per week that the ad does not quantify. Time per task depends on your experience and workflow, so the hourly figure is a target. Contributions to unfamiliar open source projects take longest at the start, while you learn each project's conventions.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Real contribution work rather than synthetic puzzles
  • Rewards a public open source track record, which you can point to directly
  • 37 openings, posted within the last fortnight
  • Seven languages accepted for the proficiency bar

Less good:

  • "Expert-level in two languages" plus competitive programming is a high combined bar
  • Per-task pay with an unstated weekly minimum; rejected work is unpaid
  • No weekly hours stated, unlike micro1's 15-hour software task listings
  • micro1 expects first tasks within 24–48 hours of onboarding and usually fills roles within 48 hours
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal ten days before we read it on 24 September 2026. The $50–100/hour band, 37 openings and per-task compensation terms are its published text. micro1's own title uses a dash; we render it with a colon. No country restriction is stated and the customer is not named. See micro1.
