  • java
  • debugging
  • code translation

What you'll do

The distinguishing demand is breadth. You create, solve, review and validate challenging software tasks that cross the whole stack, so a single task can take you from browser state through an API contract and a service down to the database and back.

Typical work:

  • Building and debugging front-end and back-end components, and the APIs and data models behind user-facing features
  • Tracing requests and data across browsers, front ends, APIs, services, databases and external integrations
  • Diagnosing failures in state, API contracts, authentication, persistence, networking and deployment
  • Working inside repositories you have never seen and working out how they fit together
  • Reviewing AI-generated solutions for correctness, completeness, performance, security and maintainability
  • Translating complete builds from one programming language into another, which the ad singles out as part of the project

Who fits

Engineers who genuinely work across the stack. The ad is explicit that specialising in one layer is not enough. It asks for:

  • Strong professional experience shipping production full-stack applications
  • Meaningful hands-on front-end and back-end work
  • Production experience in several programming languages
  • Solid knowledge of browser apps, APIs, application state, databases and service integration
  • Experience contributing to the architecture of complete systems
  • Comfort in unfamiliar codebases, and strong debugging

What it pays

$50–100/hour is the band, with output-based pay: per task that meets the specification, and a minimum number of tasks per week (the number is not given). Time per task depends on experience and workflow. Language-to-language ports of whole builds can be long, so ask how those tasks are sized before assuming the hourly figure.

Commitment and process

  • About 15 hours a week on a schedule you choose, weekends allowed, as long as there is regular activity
  • Location is global and fully remote, with no country restriction
  • Screening questions, a roughly 30-minute AI interview, a technical assessment if required, then a hiring manager review
  • micro1 usually fills roles within 48 hours and expects first tasks within 24–48 hours of onboarding

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Open worldwide, which many of micro1's engineering listings do not say
  • 300 openings, flagged high demand
  • Flexible hours around other work
  • Varied tasks, from debugging to cross-language ports

Less good:

  • Per-task pay with an unstated weekly minimum; rejected work is unpaid
  • "Must be active" on a flexible schedule means long gaps may not be welcome
  • Single-layer specialists are explicitly not the target
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage
