Three names, one job

This posting has an identity problem that will cause people to skip a role they qualify for.

The listing is titled STEM Expert. The job description underneath it is headed "Hardware Expert". The only skill tagged on the job card is Biology. None of those three describes the role accurately.

The actual ad asks for deep expertise in at least one of seven fields, and hardware is not among them. Read the requirements below rather than any of the three labels.

What you'll do

You solve hard problems in your own field, and then judge machine attempts at the same problems. The representative task is analysing a scientific or mathematical problem, developing a rigorous solution, using Python to run the calculations or simulations, and evaluating whether an AI-generated answer is technically correct.

The evaluation half is where the skill sits. You identify "incorrect assumptions, reasoning errors, missing constraints, and subtle technical mistakes", the failure modes where an answer looks plausible and is wrong for a structural reason. You also compare alternative solution approaches and decide whether the conclusion is actually supported by the evidence, run sanity checks, and produce clear reproducible reference solutions.

Interpreting equations, experimental results, datasets, technical diagrams and scientific literature is part of it where relevant.

Which fields qualify

You are not expected to span STEM. The ad asks for deep expertise in at least one of these:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Earth Science, Geoscience, or Environmental Science
  • Linguistics or Computational Linguistics
  • Robotics

Adjacent scientific or quantitative disciplines may be considered where the expertise is directly relevant. Note that linguistics sits on this list, a field that rarely appears on a STEM job board, and whose practitioners are unlikely to search for one.

What you need

Listed as required, not preferred:

  • Strong expertise in at least one relevant STEM or scientific domain
  • Practical proficiency with Python
  • Strong scientific, mathematical or quantitative problem-solving ability
  • The ability to reason carefully about assumptions, constraints, edge cases and sources of error
  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts and solutions clearly
  • Experience validating, reviewing or troubleshooting technical work

NumPy, SciPy, pandas, SymPy, Jupyter and domain-specific scientific libraries are named as relevant, with no particular library mandatory.

No degree required, and the ad says so plainly

Expertise may come from academic research, industry, teaching, engineering, independent technical work, or other demonstrated experience. A specific degree or number of years of experience is not strictly required if you can demonstrate strong expertise in your field.

This matters if you have been filtered out of this market before. Teaching is named explicitly, which is unusual: a physics teacher who writes Python and can pick apart a flawed solution is inside the stated requirements.

What it pays

$50–100/hour, and this ad does explain its structure: compensation is output-based, with experts paid per task that meets the project specification. The time a task takes "may vary depending on the expert's experience and workflow", so the hourly band describes a fast contributor's outcome rather than a rate owed for time spent.

It also states that minimum submission requirements apply, without saying what the minimum is. Ask before accepting.

How you get hired

Three stages: apply and complete the screening questions, sit an AI interview of roughly 30 minutes, then hiring manager review. There is no separate technical assessment stage.

Roles are stated to fill typically within 48 hours, with first tasks 24 to 48 hours after onboarding.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • No degree and no minimum years, stated outright rather than implied
  • Seven fields qualify, and adjacent quantitative disciplines may too
  • Teaching and independent technical work count as sources of expertise
  • Explicitly global and fully remote
  • You choose your hours and days, weekends included
  • A three-stage process with no separate technical assessment
  • The work is real reasoning, such as finding the missing constraint

Less good:

  • The listing is mislabelled three ways, so it is hard to find and easy to dismiss
  • Output-based pay against an advertised hourly band, and rigorous solution-writing is slow
  • A submission minimum applies but the number is not stated
  • $50–100/hour is modest for work requiring genuine domain depth plus Python
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
  • Expected to start 24–48 hours after onboarding
  • Neither the customer nor the project length is named

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal, confirmed open on 7 September 2026. The $50–100/hour band, the seven qualifying fields, the required skills, the compensation structure and the three-stage process are its own published text for this listing.

The mismatch between the listing title, the "Hardware Expert" heading in the ad body, and the single "Biology" skill tag is in the posting as published; we have described it rather than picked one. No language requirement is stated, so that field is left empty. We could not verify the per-task rate or the submission minimum; neither is published. The ad calls the role global; platform-wide eligibility rules still apply and are on the micro1 page.
