Engineering Manager

What you'll do

You are the delivery owner for a team that writes and reviews code for LLM training. The team (the ad says 20 or more Python, JavaScript, Java and other developers) produces data for supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Your job is quality, throughput and cost, and keeping the researcher client satisfied. The ad lists:

• Leading and managing the developer team day to day
• Running rigorous review so datasets stay high quality
• Taking a project from start-up to a stable state with full responsibility for delivery
• Fixing problems with unclear questions, weak methodology, poor result communication or bugs
• Raising the quality of Python, JavaScript and Java code the team produces

Who fits

• 8+ years of professional software engineering, including 3+ in an engineering management role
• Experience managing large technical teams in a delivery-oriented role, with Python or Java, ideally also JavaScript
• Willingness to do hands-on technical work to find and fix quality issues
• Strong leadership, people management and stakeholder communication

What it pays

Worth knowing

Good:

• A management seat in LLM data work, which is rarer than annotator or trainer roles
• Longer than most Turing assignments: 10 months
• Hours are defined: at least 4 hours a day and 20 hours a week, with 4 hours of overlap with PST, and options of 20, 30 or 40 hours a week

Less good:

• Contractor assignment, with no medical or paid leave, despite the management scope
• Limited to India and LATAM countries; the ad does not list the countries
• Two interview rounds, about 120 minutes in total (60 technical, 60 leadership)
