Medical and healthcare AI training jobs: tasks, pay and who qualifies

Overview · 1 week ago

Medical AI training jobs pay doctors, nurses and other clinicians to check and stress-test how AI handles medicine. From 45 healthcare listings on this site: the main task types, what they pay (physician roles median $180 an hour), which credentials count and where the lower doors are.

What medical AI training work involves

Medical AI training jobs pay clinicians to check, correct and stress-test how AI models handle medicine. On 29 September 2026 this site listed 65 roles under Health & Medicine, out of 699 listings in total. 20 of those are psychology and mental health roles, covered in their own guide. This guide covers the other 45: physicians, nurses, pharma and life-sciences specialists, coders and allied health.

The tasks come in four recognisable shapes.

Ground truth and evaluation. Mercor's radiologist pool has you interpret imaging cases and write out your reasoning step by step, producing the reference answers imaging models are trained and graded against. Its dermatologist listings do the same with clinical images.

Clinical documentation review. Mercor's multilingual physician listings, such as primary care, compare AI-generated notes with what a practising doctor would actually chart, and flag omissions and hallucinations.

Question writing. micro1's Medical Evaluation Specialist listing asks for original exam-style questions hard enough that frontier models get them wrong, each sourced to guidelines or primary literature.

Coding and product support. micro1's medical coder listing assigns ICD-10 and CPT codes to build training datasets, and Mercor's RN annotator role sits closer to a part-time clinical member of a product team.

What it pays

Of the 45, 43 quote an hourly rate, from $25 to $400. The median midpoint is $85 an hour, but the spread depends almost entirely on the credential. The 13 listings with a physician title (MD, clinician, radiologist, dermatologist, hospitalist) have a median midpoint of $180. The radiologist pool tops the board at $200–400, and dermatology pays $270.

Below physicians the rates step down clearly. Registered nurses see $55–65 on Mercor. Pharmaceutical R&D, pharmacovigilance and medical writing roles mostly fall between $50 and $115. Medical coding, medical auditing and a pharmacy technician listing sit at $25–40.

Two Mercor listings, Clinical Medicine Domain Expert and its pharmaceutical R&D sibling, are full-time jobs placed inside an AI lab rather than contract tasks. The clinical one pays $70–110 and asks for four years of post-residency practice.

Who qualifies

The physician roles are strict. 20 of the 45 listings mention an MD or DO, and the high-paying ones ask for a completed residency, an active unrestricted licence, board certification or several years of post-residency practice. Some also require you to be currently practising. 14 of the 45 restrict where you live, usually to the US.

There are lower doors. The medical evaluation role accepts medical students. The coding role wants an active AAPC CPC credential rather than a medical degree. micro1 also lists a licensed dietitian and a personal trainer.

Mercor posts 26 of these listings and micro1 19. AI experience is usually a plus rather than a requirement; what counts is clinical judgement you can put into writing.
