What you'll do

This is data work for a foundational LLM company, done by someone who can really read Python. The ad explains the two kinds of output. For supervised fine-tuning you write or receive a prompt with code and questions, produce model responses and write the Python that solves them. For RLHF you pose questions to a model, compare two versions' outputs and write the feedback that goes back into training. The ad is explicit that you will not be building or fine-tuning LLMs.

Day to day it lists:

  • Writing and maintaining clean Python for training and optimisation
  • Running evaluations and analysing model performance
  • Ranking AI responses to queries against set criteria and writing rationales
  • Creating task-specific SFT datasets and optimal reference responses
  • Working with researchers and annotators on RLHF and reward models
  • Peer-reviewing code and documentation

Who fits

  • 3+ years of strong Python
  • Industry experience with code quality, formatting and good practice
  • Experience with Python testing (unit, integration, property-based)
  • Knowledge of multi-threading and async Python
  • Comfort refactoring architecture without regressions, and debugging memory and concurrency issues
  • Fluent conversational and written English

What it pays

The ad does not publish a rate. Turing sets rates per project, so the figure comes after matching; see Turing for how pay generally works there.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Hours are your choice of three options: 20, 30 or 40 a week
  • Code-centric work with a stated evaluation process
  • Fully remote

Less good:

  • No rate published
  • Initial term is 1 month, start expected the following week
  • Minimum 4 hours a day with 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Time
  • Contractor assignment with no medical or paid leave
  • Long-running posting (first listed in January 2024), so the project may already be staffed in places

How hiring works

The ad describes about 75 minutes of evaluation: a 60-minute technical interview plus a 15-minute cultural and offer discussion.
