How it works
DataAnnotation recruits contractors to evaluate chatbot answers, compare model outputs, write challenging prompts and review code. Its FAQ describes a single entry point, the Starter Assessment: about an hour for general tracks and one to two hours for specialised ones, taken once with no retakes. The FAQ says approval notices usually arrive within a few days. After that, projects appear on your dashboard and you choose which to take and when.
The marketing site does not name a parent company. Court records do: a proposed class action filed in San Francisco Superior Court on 20 May 2025 names the defendant as "Surge Labs, Inc. dba DataAnnotation", the company better known as Surge AI, together with its chief executive Edwin Chen. The complaint alleges annotators were misclassified as independent contractors and not paid for required training. Those are allegations rather than findings; Bloomberg Law and Inc. both covered the filing.

Worth knowing
Good:
- The Trust & Safety page states that DataAnnotation will never ask you for money, and that its own sign-up flow is the only way to apply
- Starting rates are published per track on the FAQ, which many platforms in this market do not do
- On Trustpilot DataAnnotation held a TrustScore of 3.9 from 1,969 reviews when we checked, 55 percent of them five-star; positive reviewers mention flexible hours and prompt payouts when work is available
- The homepage links to contractors' own Reddit milestone posts rather than anonymous testimonials, so the claims can at least be checked
Less good:
- One unpaid attempt at the assessment, and no published notice of rejection, so a silence can mean anything
- The same Trustpilot page is 20 percent one-star, and the complaints repeat: long stretches with no projects, slow support, and accounts locked with little explanation. One September 2026 reviewer describes an account locked with "multi 4-figures" in the balance and no answer to three emails
- Contractors on r/DataAnnotationTech call a stretch without tasks a "drought"; at least twenty posts with the word in the title appeared between late August and late September 2026 alone, some celebrating that one had ended
- No list of eligible countries anywhere on the site
- PayPal is the only payout rail the FAQ names, so check that you can hold a PayPal account where you live before spending an hour on the assessment
About this page
Facts above come from DataAnnotation's homepage, FAQ and Trust & Safety page at dataannotation.tech, last checked 29 September 2026, and from press coverage of the 2025 complaint. The pay range in the facts grid spans the tracks the FAQ lists, from multilingual at the bottom to coding at the top. The FAQ states each track as a floor or a range with a plus sign, so read it as starting rates, not a promise of hours. DataAnnotation does not publish how much work you will be offered, which countries it accepts, or its removal criteria, and we have not guessed at any of them.
Worker reports come from DataAnnotation's Trustpilot page and r/DataAnnotationTech and are attributed where they appear. For how PayPal compares with other payout rails, see how you actually get paid; for open roles on other platforms, browse general AI training jobs.
