Sites like DataAnnotation: alternatives worth applying to in 2026
Platform comparison · 1 week ago
If DataAnnotation has gone quiet, rejected you or never replied, there are more than twenty other platforms paying for AI training work. They differ on entry gates, published pay, payout rails and where they accept people from. Here they are grouped by who they suit, with the four names that turn out to be the same company as a platform you already know.
Why people look for an alternative
People go looking for sites like DataAnnotation for one of three reasons: the Starter Assessment went unanswered, the dashboard has had no projects for weeks, or PayPal does not work where they live. Each reason points to a different kind of platform. Someone waiting on DataAnnotation wants a platform with a different gate, while someone hit by a drought wants one with a different source of work. Someone outside PayPal's reach just needs a different way to be paid.
Everything below comes from our company pages, which are built from each platform's own site and checked between 6 and 29 September 2026. Worker reports are marked as such. For the platform you are leaving, see is DataAnnotation.tech legit?.
First, four names that are not alternatives
Several platforms you will see recommended are the same company as one you already know:
- Surge AI is DataAnnotation's parent company. Applying to Surge is applying to the same business
- Scale AI runs its contributor work through Outlier and Remotasks, and hires only a small fellowship directly
- Toloka has moved its worker tasks, accounts and balances to Mindrift
- LXT runs its crowd work through Clickworker
The closest match: expert AI training platforms
These pay for the same kind of work as DataAnnotation (writing prompts, rating and ranking model answers, checking facts and code), usually from people with a degree or professional experience.
| Platform | Entry | Published pay | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outlier | Associate degree minimum, 30–90 minute onboarding, assessment per project | Rate shown before each project | PayPal, Airtm or ACH, weekly on Tuesdays |
| Alignerr | Resume, phone and Persona ID check, contract; some jobs add a Zara AI interview | Rate on every listing | Stripe Connect or PayPal (one per country), weekly |
| Mindrift | CV, assessments and ID for expert work; most contributors hold a master's or PhD | $15–$100 an hour on the homepage; paid per approved task | Payoneer or PayPal via Tipalti, on the 5th and 20th |
| Invisible Technologies | Profile, resume, a qualification of about 30 minutes, specialty assessments | Fixed rate per listing, commonly $17 an hour, up to $60 for technical auditing | Stripe or Wise |
| Mercor | Apply once, interviews and assessments, ID and background checks | Set per project, stated on each listing | Stripe or Wise, weekly on Wednesdays |
| micro1 | Zara AI interview and skill certification | Not published | micro1 wallet |
| Handshake AI | ID check, then matched by Handshake's team | Posted per role and fixed once posted | Stripe, weekly |
A few things separate them.
Outlier is the most direct substitute, and our DataAnnotation vs Outlier comparison covers it in detail. Its associate degree rule is the catch.
Alignerr says you can work from almost anywhere in the world and puts a rate on every listing, so you know the number before you apply. Its onboarding is long, and workers on Glassdoor and Reddit report unpaid evaluation phases and deactivations with work outstanding. Our Alignerr onboarding guide walks through each step.
Mindrift is run by the company formerly known as Toloka and has two routes: expert "AI tutor" work, and all-access microtasks that need no application. Because it pays per approved task, slower workers earn less per hour, and reviewers on Trustpilot (3.4) describe weeks of waiting after onboarding.
Invisible publishes fixed rates on its listings, which few platforms do, and it says it works in more than 120 countries. It also has a student route at $15 to $20 an hour.
Mercor, micro1 and Handshake AI match you to projects rather than letting you pick. Mercor only onboards people in its supported countries, micro1 cannot hire from twenty listed countries, and Handshake AI is US only. See our five-platform comparison for how each gets you in.
If you code
DataAnnotation's coding track pays its highest published rates, and several platforms focus on the same work:
- Turing wants three or more years of development experience and runs proctored tests and live interviews. Review takes 48 hours to six weeks, and a rejection means waiting three months to reapply
- AfterQuery runs one unpaid assessment per expert pool, with no retake and no result notice, and pays through Stripe only. Reviewers on Trustpilot (2.9) describe work stuck at "Needs Review" for weeks
- Rise Data Labs screens with an AI interview and a domain assessment, and shows an hourly rate on each role
- Outlier, Alignerr and micro1 all name coding or engineering as a core area
Our guide to AI training work for software engineers sets out the kinds of coding job and what each pays.
If you have no degree or no experience
Most expert platforms screen on credentials. These do not, or have a route that does not:
- Mindrift's all-access microtasks (labelling, transcribing) need no application
- Prolific runs research studies with a published minimum of $8 an hour, pays through PayPal once your balance reaches £6 or $6, and accepts people in 52 listed countries. Its AI tasks are by invitation, and new sign-ups may join a waitlist
- Clickworker needs no degree and pays per task, from €1 to "tens of euros", through PayPal, Payoneer, SEPA or ACH
- Remotasks offers free training courses and pays weekly through PayPal or Airtm. Its expert work has moved to Outlier, and workers on Trustpilot (2.5) report low pay for the time taken
- Uber AI Solutions has no education minimum and pays weekly by bank transfer, but is live only in the US outside CA, CO, IL, MA, NJ, OR, PA, WA and DC. Everywhere else is a waitlist
- Alignerr has transcription listings that state no experience is needed
- micro1 pays for short recordings of everyday tasks for robotics training, open to people without credentials
Pay on these is lower than on expert platforms. See data annotation jobs without a degree and AI training jobs for beginners for more.
If you speak another language
The localisation companies below run most of their work by language and country, and they often want a native speaker living in a particular place:
- TELUS Digital AI Community hires search and quality raters and says it works in 104-plus countries. Some roles carry residency rules, such as five years for its Australian rater role, and pay is monthly
- Appen, which recruits through CrowdGen, matches you on location and language, and pays monthly through bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer or Airtm
- Welocalize runs a language and cultural assessment, locks each role to one country and one language, and pays through Hyperwallet
- OneForma shows each project's rate before you accept and lists more than 300 languages
- DataForce by TransPerfect runs speech, photo and video collection projects, some on site, and pays after a quality check of two to six weeks on remote work
- Lionbridge wants native-level target language and fluent English, with an assessment per project
Worker reports on this group are the harshest in the market. Trustpilot ratings for OneForma (1.4), Appen (1.4), Lionbridge (1.7) and TELUS (1.8, from only 14 reviews) are low, and reviewers describe few projects, slow payments and deactivations. Our guide to AI training jobs for bilingual speakers covers which languages pay what.
If you live outside the US
The platforms that publish a wide reach are Alignerr ("almost anywhere"), Invisible (120-plus countries), micro1 (global except twenty named countries), Mindrift (wherever a payment provider supports you) and the language companies above. Handshake AI and Uber AI Solutions are effectively US only.
Payout rails decide more than eligibility does. PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm, Stripe and Wise each cover a different set of countries, and a platform you can join is useless if it cannot pay you. Check the rail first, using our guide to payment platforms and the countries they do not cover, and see AI training pay by country.
How to choose
- Rejected or ignored by DataAnnotation: try a platform with a different gate. Alignerr and Invisible screen per listing, and Mindrift's all-access route has no gate at all
- Accepted but no work: add a platform with a different source of work, not a clone. A matching platform such as Mercor or micro1 fails differently from a queue-based one
- PayPal does not work for you: filter by rail. Outlier offers Airtm, Mindrift offers Payoneer, and Mercor and Invisible offer Wise
- You want the rate before you commit: Alignerr, Invisible, Handshake AI and OneForma show it per listing; Outlier shows it per project
Apply to two or three at once. Applying to several AI training platforms at once explains how to keep it manageable, and how to spot fake listings covers the imitations that follow every popular platform. If anyone asks you to pay to apply, for training or for a certificate, walk away.
