How Ethos works

Ethos is an expert network rather than an annotation platform. Research firms, consultancies, investors and AI labs post opportunities, and Ethos matches them to people with the relevant professional background. Ethos describes itself as "the platform that matches human expertise to paid opportunities, from advisory roles to consulting opportunities and full-time positions", and states that it is backed by a16z and General Catalyst.

The route in has three steps on Ethos's own account: create an expert profile, get matched by their AI to relevant opportunities, and get paid for the work you accept. Ethos states that joining is free, carries no commitment, and lets you set your own availability. Onboarding runs through a conversational AI agent rather than a conventional application form.

What the work looks like

Ethos sorts work by engagement type rather than by task. Clients posting to the network choose between expert calls, part-time and project consulting, and full-time roles, and Ethos names advisory calls, consulting and research projects as the three ways an expert earns.

The AI training work on the network sits at the senior end of the field. You are paid for judgement inside a field you already practise in: reviewing model output against professional standards, writing reference answers, or evaluating reasoning a general-purpose model gets wrong. That makes it a poor match for someone looking for their first annotation job and a good one for someone with a decade in medicine, law, finance or engineering.

What it pays

Ethos publishes no rate card. Rates are set per engagement and track the expertise the client is paying for, so a figure quoted for one advisory call tells you little about the next project. Third-party trackers have reported hourly rates spanning roughly $35 to $225, with a median near $80, but we have not been able to confirm any of those figures against an Ethos source and would not plan around them.

Ethos also does not state a payout schedule or a payment method on its expert-facing pages. Expect to agree terms at the engagement rather than to find them published up front.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Built for credentialed professionals, so rates sit well above general annotation work
  • Free to join, no commitment, and you set your own availability
  • Opportunities are matched to your profile rather than applied for one listing at a time
  • Named institutional backing (a16z, General Catalyst), which Ethos states publicly
  • The work spans advisory, consulting and full-time roles, not just AI training

Less good:

  • No published rate, payout schedule, or payment method: the terms surface at the engagement
  • Matching is the gate: a completed profile is no guarantee that any opportunity is offered
  • The bar is senior, credentialed expertise, so it is the wrong first platform for a beginner
  • Ethos does not state which countries it accepts, so eligibility is unclear until you sign up
  • Work is inherently intermittent: advisory networks pay well per hour and offer few of them

About this page

Written from Ethos's own expert-facing pages, last checked on 6 September 2026. We are not affiliated with Ethos and we do not process applications; the sign-up button sends you to Ethos's own site. We could not verify pay rates, payout terms, payment methods or country eligibility from any Ethos source, and have left those fields empty rather than guess.
