Remotasks

Remotasks is Scale AI's task platform for image labelling, audio transcription and data annotation. It still operates in 2026, but Scale runs its expert language-model work through Outlier instead, and Remotasks has withdrawn from some countries.

Status in 2026

Remotasks is still operating. Its site loads, sign-up is open, and it describes itself as "Powered by Scale AI". What has changed is its place in Scale's business. Scale now runs its large language model work (prompt writing, rubric building and ranking model answers for expert pay) through its other platform, Outlier, which calls itself "a platform operated by Scale AI". Remotasks' own Working Location Policy, last updated in February 2023, still refers to generative AI projects on the platform, but its homepage today advertises labelling images, transcribing audio and annotating data. If you came looking for writing or coding projects, Outlier is where Scale offers them now; the Scale AI page explains how the pieces fit together.

How it works

The homepage sets out three steps: learn a task type through short online courses or free hands-on training, work on tasks from the projects you have unlocked, and get paid on the quality and number of tasks you complete. Harder task types pay more once you are trained on them. Remotasks states it is available in 90+ countries with 240,000+ taskers, but it publishes no list of those countries.

The Working Location Policy also limits where you can work. It says generative AI projects are "available in limited countries", that you may have to verify your identity and location with a government ID, and that the verified location becomes your Primary Country. Work from anywhere else, or move without updating it, and your account may be paused pending verification.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Training for each task type is free and online, and the homepage lists no degree requirement
  • It is backed by Scale AI, whose About page states it has paid $1B to contributors across its platforms

Less good:

  • Remotasks ended operations in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan in March 2024 and paused new sign-ups in Thailand, Vietnam and Poland, Rest of World reported. Scale cited "enhanced security protocols" and said contractors in Kenya missed the advance notice "due to operational errors"
  • The Washington Post reported in August 2023 that 34 of the 36 current and former Remotasks workers it interviewed in the Philippines had had payments delayed, reduced or cancelled
  • Remotasks holds a TrustScore of 2.5 from 805 reviews on Trustpilot, 59 percent of them one-star. Recent reviewers complain of low pay for the time a task takes, shortages of tasks in some regions, and a support team one July 2026 reviewer called "not responsive at all"
  • Your account is tied to one verified country, which rules out working while travelling

About this page

Facts above come from the Remotasks homepage and its Working Location Policy at remotasks.com, last checked 29 September 2026, and from Outlier's FAQ for the relationship between the two platforms. Remotasks publishes no rates, only that harder tasks pay more, so the pay fields on this page are empty. We could not open the Remotasks help centre, and we found no Remotasks statement about closing or merging into Outlier, so this page does not claim either. Worker accounts come from Trustpilot, Rest of World and The Washington Post and are attributed where they appear.
