What you'll do
You build the test material, then judge the answers. AfterQuery writes realistic business intelligence scenarios that frontier AI labs use to see how well a model handles dashboards and reporting, and you author them from the data model through the dashboard build and the rollout. For each scenario you write a reference answer that explains the visualization and metric choices behind it, then grade model output for analytical accuracy and chart integrity.
One task in the ad is more particular than it looks: flagging dashboards that read as polished but mislead the reader. That is a skill most working analysts have and rarely get credit for, and it is the center of this role.
Who fits
- At least 2 years of professional BI or analytics experience
- Hands-on depth in at least one of Tableau, Power BI or Looker (the ad says "such as", so another BI tool is arguable, though the ad names only these three)
- Strong SQL, used for building and validating the data behind dashboards
- Clear written English, since documenting your reasoning is the output
- A commitment of at least 10 hours a week
Preferred, not required: a certification such as Tableau Desktop Specialist or Microsoft PL-300, semantic layer or data modeling experience (LookML or dbt), and executive or stakeholder-facing reporting.
What it pays
The ad's contract section states $50 to $90/hr, paid weekly via Stripe, with the rate set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The AfterQuery board headlines $70/hr for this role, which sits in the middle of that range. Work is fully remote and async with no fixed hours, a 10 hour weekly minimum and no maximum, and the ad says there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers. It is independent contractor work, described as ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
The ad lists five steps: a roughly five minute application (resume plus a few structured questions); a resume review against a published rubric, with a decision on every application; a possible written assessment for further placement; onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access); and a project match, usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Pay is stated as a range with a published basis (your experience)
- Weekly payment and a clear statement that there is no monitoring software
- Ongoing project work with no cap on hours
- Work that rewards judgment about misleading charts, not only tool speed
Less good:
- The 10 hour weekly minimum is a real commitment for anyone with a full-time job
- The ad says you may be asked to take a written assessment; the company page notes AfterQuery assessments are unpaid with one attempt
- Being matched to live work is not guaranteed by an application, and the ad gives "usually within a week of onboarding" as the norm, not a promise
