What you'll do
You write the kind of problem a bench scientist actually reasons through, then grade how an AI model handles it. Scenarios run from assay design through data interpretation, each with a reference answer that shows the mechanism and weighs the evidence rather than just naming a conclusion.
Grading is the other half: scoring model output for pathway accuracy, experimental logic and honest uncertainty. The most valuable skill here is spotting an explanation that reads fluently but gets the biochemistry wrong, because those are the errors a non-specialist reviewer would miss.
AfterQuery describes this as the broad life science pool that its science evaluations draw on most, so expect a range of topics rather than one narrow niche.
Who fits
- An advanced degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related field
- At least 2 years of research or industry experience in molecular life science
- Hands-on technique depth, such as cloning, protein work, sequencing or assay design
- Clear written English, since the job is turning scientific judgment into teachable reasoning
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: a PhD and peer-reviewed publications, biotech or pharma research experience, and bioinformatics or structural biology breadth.
What it pays
The ad states $60 to $120 per hour, with the rate set from your experience rather than negotiated down after you start. The AfterQuery board headlines $90 per hour for this role, which sits in the middle of that band. Pay is weekly via Stripe.
The commitment is a minimum of 10 hours a week with no maximum, fully remote and async, with no fixed hours. The ad says there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timer. It is independent contractor work, described as ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
The application takes about five minutes: a resume and a few structured questions. AfterQuery says every application is read against a published rubric and gets a decision. You may then be asked to take a written assessment for further placement. Onboarding means signing the contractor agreement, connecting Stripe and getting platform access, and the ad says you are matched to live work in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Work stays in your specialty and is judged on scientific reasoning, not output volume
- A published pay band with the rate set from experience
- Flexible, async hours that you can scale up or down week to week
- No monitoring software, as stated in the ad
Less good:
- A 10-hour weekly minimum is a real commitment for someone with a day job
- The listing says a written assessment is possible, and AfterQuery's help centre describes assessments as unpaid and single-attempt (see the company page)
- Project availability can vary, so the rate is not the same as guaranteed hours
About this listing
Read from the AfterQuery Experts board on 18 October 2026, where it was posted on 27 August 2026. The pay band, 10-hour minimum, weekly Stripe payment and hiring steps are AfterQuery's own text. If you want a broader life science role, the board also carries a general Biology Expert listing. See AfterQuery.
