What you'll do

This is applied machine learning on biological data. The ad lists work such as building, training and evaluating models for variant calling, gene expression analysis or pathway modeling, developing supervised and unsupervised predictive models, and designing bioinformatics pipelines with ML components that are scalable and reproducible. You document methods, model assumptions and technical approaches so another person can reproduce them.

The ad does not say what the data or the end customer is, and it does not use the word evaluation or mention AI labs, so treat it as research-style project work and check the assessment before assuming otherwise. It does describe the engagement as project-by-project, over the next 2 to 3 weeks, asynchronous.

Who qualifies

  • A published researcher with at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal; this is stated as required
  • Demonstrated expertise in both machine learning and bioinformatics (sequence analysis, genomics, transcriptomics or related areas)
  • A Master's or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Data Science or a related quantitative field
  • Strong problem-solving and the ability to work independently

Preferred: experience with standard tooling such as GATK, STAR, DESeq2, Nextflow or Snakemake; teaching or TA experience in bioinformatics, ML or computational biology; familiarity with biological foundation models or large-scale omics ML frameworks (the ad names scVI, DNABERT and Enformer).

What it pays

The ad says project-based pay ranges from $150 to $200/hour, and the AfterQuery board headlines $175/hr, the middle of that range. Expected commitment is 10 to 20 hours a week for the projects you accept. The ad does not publish payment terms such as payout schedule; the company page describes how AfterQuery pays contractors in general.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • One of the higher stated bands among AfterQuery's data roles
  • Scope is specific and technical, not generic labelling
  • Flexible, asynchronous schedule
  • The ad pitches work with an early-stage Y Combinator-backed company

Less good:

  • Hard publication and degree bar; strong industry practitioners without a first-author paper do not meet the stated requirement
  • Short engagements (2 to 3 weeks) assigned project by project, with no stated guarantee of continuing work
  • The ad does not describe an application or assessment process; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification
