What you'll do
You write realistic biology scenarios, from experimental design through interpretation, and grade how an AI model reasons through them. Each scenario gets a reference answer that lays out the scientific reasoning, with mechanisms and evidence weighed rather than a bare conclusion.
You also grade model output for mechanistic accuracy, evidence handling and appropriate uncertainty, and flag answers that sound confident but get the biology wrong. AfterQuery calls this the anchor listing for its life, physical and social science domain, so any biology specialty is welcome and the topics you see will vary.
Who fits
- An advanced degree in biology or a closely related field, or equivalent research experience
- At least 2 years of research, industry or teaching experience in the life sciences
- Depth in an area such as genetics, ecology, microbiology, physiology or evolution
- Clear written English for documenting scientific reasoning
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: a PhD and peer-reviewed publications, wet lab or field research experience, and teaching or science communication experience. Educators count, which is less common on expert boards.
What it pays
The ad states $60 to $120 per hour, with the rate set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The AfterQuery board headlines $90 per hour. Pay is weekly via Stripe.
The minimum is 10 hours a week with no maximum, fully remote and async, with no fixed hours. The ad says there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timer. It is independent contractor work, described as ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
You apply with a resume and a few structured questions, about five minutes. Applications are read against a published rubric and each gets a decision. A written assessment may follow for further placement, then onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access), and a match to live work in your specialty, usually within a week.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Open to every biology specialty, with teaching experience counted
- Judged on scientific judgment rather than volume
- Published pay band, set from experience
- Flexible hours and no monitoring software, per the ad
Less good:
- A 10-hour weekly minimum is a real commitment
- Because it is a catch-all listing, you may wait for a project that matches your specialty
- AfterQuery's help centre describes assessments as unpaid and single-attempt (see the company page)
About this listing
Read from the AfterQuery Experts board on 18 October 2026, where it was posted on 27 August 2026. The pay band, 10-hour minimum, weekly Stripe payment and hiring steps are AfterQuery's own text. If your background is specifically molecular, the board also lists a narrower Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Expert role at the same band. See AfterQuery.
