What you'll do

Per the ad, you design and evaluate civil engineering scenarios that test whether an AI model can interpret and apply infrastructure and structural design principles. Concretely: develop civil engineering questions and case studies on topics the ad lists as structural analysis, foundation design, transportation planning, hydraulics, soil mechanics, construction management, building codes and environmental engineering; evaluate and validate model responses with detailed feedback on technical accuracy and adherence to civil engineering standards; and work with a team of engineering and technical experts to tune question difficulty so content is both challenging and educational.

The spread of topics is wide, so the people who do well tend to be comfortable writing across disciplines or clear about the one they are strongest in. The ad does not say whether you choose a specialty.

Who fits

  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited program
  • Proven experience in civil engineering practice, design or project management (the ad does not give a number of years)
  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail

Preferred: multiple years of experience across diverse projects (structural, transportation, geotechnical, water resources, environmental), involvement in engineering publications, standards development or engineering technology initiatives, and a PE license, advanced degree or relevant certifications.

What it pays

The board shows $95/hour. The ad calls the compensation competitive and hourly, and describes a remote, asynchronous role you fit around your own schedule. It does not publish a range, weekly hours or payment terms; the company page covers how AfterQuery pays contractors generally.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Remote and flexible, on your own schedule
  • A degree plus practice experience is enough to meet the stated bar; a PE license is optional
  • The ad describes working with a team of engineering experts on question difficulty

Less good:

  • No pay range, minimum hours or payment terms on the listing
  • No hiring steps described; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification
  • The posting dates from February 2026 and was still open when read, so check how current the demand is

About this listing

Posted on the AfterQuery Experts board on 9 February 2026 and still open when read on 18 October 2026. The ad describes AfterQuery as a YC-backed startup. Duties, qualifications and the remote, asynchronous format are the ad's own text. Engagement is as an independent contractor. See AfterQuery.
