What you'll do

You write empirical economics problems from your own work and solve them. The ad lists causal questions, panel data, choice models and forecasting as the ground. Each problem is worked through to a reference answer with the reasoning behind every step, which frontier AI labs use to test model judgment. The ad also asks you to catch identification and modeling mistakes that look reasonable but only a practitioner would spot, which is where an econometrician's training is most useful.

Who fits

  • A Master's or PhD in economics or a related quantitative social science
  • 3+ years full time in an empirical research or analytics role; internships and school do not count
  • Hands-on causal inference or econometric modeling experience
  • Comfortable with Stata, R or Python
  • Strong written English and the ability to explain an analysis clearly
  • At least 10 hours a week available

Preferred: experience running difference in differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity or synthetic control studies, or building time series forecasts.

What it pays

The board shows $115/hr and the ad text gives no range, so that is the figure. Pay is weekly via Stripe. The ad describes the work as fully async with no fixed hours, a 10 hour weekly minimum with no maximum, scaling up or down week to week, independent contractor ongoing project work, and says there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A clear single figure, paid weekly
  • Work in your specialty, judged on empirical judgment rather than volume
  • No monitoring software and no fixed hours
  • Ongoing project work with no stated cap

Less good:

  • A strict experience bar: three full years in an empirical role, with school and internships excluded
  • A 10 hour weekly minimum
  • The ad does not describe its hiring process; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid one-attempt assessment and ID verification, covered on the company page
