What you'll do

AfterQuery builds expert evaluation data for frontier AI labs, and here it hires fraud investigators to author and grade the investigation scenarios those evaluations run on.

  • Write realistic fraud scenarios from first alert through case disposition
  • Write reference answers that show the investigative reasoning behind each decision, from transaction patterns to interview strategy
  • Grade model output for investigative soundness, evidentiary rigor and completeness
  • Flag conclusions that read plausible but that the evidence does not support

Who fits

  • At least two years of professional fraud investigation casework, with depth in payments, insurance, AML or corporate investigations
  • Working command of methods such as transaction analysis, open source research, interviews and case files
  • Clear written English for documenting reasoning
  • Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
  • Preferred: CFE or equivalent, law enforcement or regulatory background, case referral, expert testimony or SAR filing experience. CFEs, former law enforcement and regulatory investigators are all named as strong fits.

The application form asks for a Certified Fraud Examiner credential and an AML or compliance certification (CAMS, CRCM, CCEP), both optional.

What it pays

The board shows $78/hour. The ad's contract section states $70 to $85/hour, so this listing records that range. Pay is weekly via Stripe, and the ad says your rate is set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start.

Other terms in the ad: fully remote and async with no fixed hours, a minimum of 10 hours a week with no maximum, no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers, and independent contractor status with ongoing project work.

How hiring works

The ad describes five steps: apply (about five minutes, resume plus structured questions); resume review against a published rubric with a decision for every application; a written assessment you may be asked to take for further placement; onboarding (sign the contractor agreement, connect Stripe, get platform access); and project match, usually within a week of onboarding.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Unusually detailed terms: weekly pay, no monitoring software, a stated rate logic
  • Flexible hours above the 10-hour floor
  • Judged on investigative judgment, not output volume

Less good:

  • The 10-hour weekly minimum is a real commitment for people with a day job
  • The rate band is narrow ($70–85), so there is limited upside
  • Matching to live work is "usually within a week", not guaranteed
