What you'll do
You work through real-world legal material under the guidance of experienced practitioners: reviewing and analysing contracts, agreements, filings and regulatory documents, researching and summarising findings, evaluating document compliance and spotting issues. The distinctive part is the annotation standard. Every conclusion has to carry a precise source citation: document name, page number and verbatim text. Accuracy and consistency across many assigned tasks matter more than clever argument.
Work is asynchronous and assigned project by project. The ad frames the current work as the next 2 to 3 weeks, at an expected 10 to 20 hours a week for the projects you accept.
Who qualifies
- Currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school, as a 1L, 2L or 3L
- A strong academic record
- Excellent, well-organised written analysis
- The ability to follow detailed guidelines and manage time across async tasks
- Preferred: coursework in contracts, real estate, energy law, administrative law or regulatory compliance; a legal internship, clinic, law review or moot court background; familiarity with Westlaw, Harvey, LexisNexis or Bloomberg Law
The ad names ABA accreditation but no country of residence.
What it pays
The board shows $125/hour and the ad text gives no range, so that is the figure. The ad calls the pay exceptional but does not say whether it is hourly or per task, and payment terms are not published on the listing; the AfterQuery company page covers the payout cycle from the company's help centre.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A high stated rate for a student, with no practice experience required
- Fits around coursework; you choose which projects to accept
- Citation-backed annotation is a transferable research habit
Less good:
- A short window: the ad describes 2 to 3 weeks of work, with 10 to 20 hours a week, which is heavy during term
- Project-by-project assignment, so work after the first stretch is not promised
- Graduates and non-ABA students are out
- AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification before project matching
