What you'll do
German is one of the better-resourced languages for AI, but that does not mean safety behaviour transfers cleanly from English. Compound nouns can pack a whole request into one word, formal and informal address change tone, and regional usage across Germany, Austria and Switzerland adds variety a model may not have seen. This role pays native speakers to write the tricky cases and classify them.
The ad describes three tasks:
- Writing expert-level prompts in German across a range of sensitive subject areas
- Applying structured guidelines to classify prompts and conversations
- Flagging adversarial phrasings and escalation patterns, and documenting your reasoning
Put simply, you write requests an AI model should decline or treat with care, and identify conversations that build towards something step by step. The sensitive topics are not named, so expect to work with difficult material. The ad also does not say whether Austrian or Swiss German usage is in scope; it simply asks for German.
Mercor trains you on the workflow; no AI experience is required.
Who fits
- Native or near-native German plus business-level written English
- A bachelor's degree, completed or in progress
- Strong written reasoning and attention to detail
- Sound judgment around sensitive and dual-use information
A plus: experience reviewing, grading or red-teaming written or technical content, or a background in trust and safety, content moderation, policy evaluation or adversarial testing. Moderation experience under German platform rules is a natural fit.
Germany or the wider Western Europe region is preferred; applicants elsewhere, including Austria and Switzerland, are welcome.
What it pays
$48–52 per hour, Mercor's published figure, the same as the French, Nordic (other than Norwegian at $58–62), Japanese and Korean generalist versions. We did not see a German STEM (PhD) counterpart among the AI safety listings we reviewed on 24 September 2026.
Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Entry-level bar; a degree in progress qualifies
- No AI experience needed, with training included
- Remote, self-scheduled, immediate start
- 8 hires this month when we checked
Less good:
- Sensitive by design, with topics undisclosed
- No weekly hours or project length stated; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- Independent contractor: in Germany you register and invoice as a freelancer or small business and handle your own tax and insurance
- H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
