Skills
  • materials science
  • materials selection
  • failure analysis
  • metals
  • polymers
  • ceramics
  • semiconductors

What you'll do

You build the materials scenarios that AI labs use to test model judgment, and you grade what the models produce. The ad breaks it into four tasks:

  • Author realistic scenarios, from materials selection through to failure analysis
  • Write reference answers that show the structure-property reasoning behind each decision
  • Grade model output for technical accuracy and practical feasibility
  • Flag recommendations that read plausible but would fail in service

The last one is the distinctive part: the value is in catching answers that sound right to a non-specialist but would not survive real use.

Who fits

  • A degree in materials science and engineering or a closely related field
  • At least 2 years of professional materials engineering or R&D experience
  • Depth in at least one materials class, such as metals, polymers, ceramics or semiconductors
  • Clear written English for documenting materials reasoning
  • Able to commit at least 10 hours per week

Preferred: an advanced degree or peer-reviewed publications; characterization depth such as SEM, XRD or DSC; failure analysis or process qualification experience.

What it pays

The ad states $100 to $130/hour, paid weekly via Stripe, with the rate set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The board headlines $115/hour. The work is remote and fully asynchronous with no fixed hours, a minimum of 10 hours a week and no maximum. The ad says there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers, and that this is ongoing project work for an independent contractor rather than single task batches.

How hiring works

Per the ad: apply (about five minutes, a resume and a few structured questions); resume review against a published rubric, with a decision on every application; possibly a written assessment for further placement; onboarding, which means signing the contractor agreement, connecting Stripe and getting platform access; then a match to live work in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A stated range with a weekly Stripe payout and no monitoring software
  • Ongoing project work, with hours you scale up or down each week
  • Every application is stated to get a decision

Less good:

  • A minimum of 10 hours a week, so it does not suit a casual side gig
  • A hard requirement of 2 or more years of professional experience
  • The written assessment is only "possible", and a match to work is not guaranteed by being accepted
