What you'll do
This is a short, project-based research engagement rather than an ongoing evaluation queue. The ad lists literature reviews and synthesis, rigorous technical writing, designing and evaluating experiments, datasets or methodologies, subject-matter support for model evaluation, data curation or benchmarking, and clear, reproducible documentation of your methods and results.
The ad describes work over the next 2 to 3 weeks, asynchronous, assigned project by project, with an expected 10 to 20 hours a week on the projects you accept. It does not name the field or the project, so expect the actual task to depend on your discipline.
Who fits
- A PhD, completed or in progress, in any quantitative, scientific, technical or humanities field
- Demonstrated expertise in your area of study and the ability to apply it to applied research problems
- Independence on technical and research tasks
- At least 5 years of work experience in an applicable industry
Note that the ad asks for both the doctorate (in progress counts) and five years of industry work, which narrows the field. Preferred: experience with AI/ML systems, datasets or evaluation pipelines, technical writing, peer review or grant writing, teaching or TA experience, and at least one first-author peer-reviewed publication.
What it pays
The board shows $150/hour. The ad's own text says project-based pay ranges from $120 to $180/hour, so this listing records that range. How a given project lands within it is not explained. The ad does not publish payment terms such as cadence or method; the AfterQuery page covers how payouts generally work.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A high hourly band for academic and research skills
- Short and bounded: 2 to 3 weeks, so it can fit between other commitments
- Open to any doctoral discipline, including the humanities
Less good:
- The ad does not name the field, client or deliverables up front
- Work is by project, with no promise of more after the first
- 10 to 20 hours a week is a meaningful load for a short window
- No hiring steps are described; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification
