What you'll do
Special education is the one track where legal reasoning sits next to teaching. You write scenarios that run from evaluation through IEP implementation, and reference answers that carry both the legal and the instructional reasoning behind each decision.
Grading means scoring model output for compliance and for appropriateness for the student, and flagging advice that reads compliant but fails the student. That final test, advice that ticks the paperwork boxes while missing what the child needs, is what the ad is most interested in.
Who fits
- A special education certification or license, or an equivalent credential
- At least 2 years teaching in special education settings
- Depth in IEP development, accommodations and differentiated instruction
- Clear written English for documenting instructional and legal reasoning
Preferred: depth in a disability category such as autism, learning disabilities, or emotional and behavioral needs; behavior intervention or crisis prevention training; and collaborative teaching or inclusion classroom experience. The form asks what level you teach (required) and offers an optional teaching license or certification field.
What it pays
The board headlines $55/hr; the ad's contract terms state $40 to $70/hr, recorded here as the range. The ad says the rate is set from experience and not negotiated down after you start, and that pay is weekly via Stripe.
It also states remote, fully async work with no fixed hours, a 10 hour weekly minimum with no maximum, no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers, and ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
The ad describes a short application with resume and structured questions, a resume review against a published rubric, a possible written assessment for further placement, onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access), and a project match usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A specialist niche where credentials and classroom experience are central
- Equivalent credentials are accepted alongside a state certification
- Weekly pay and no monitoring, stated in the ad
Less good:
- The legal reasoning component means you should be comfortable writing about compliance as well as instruction
- The 10 hour weekly minimum is substantial next to a special education caseload
- The ad does not say how experience places you within $40 to $70
