What you'll do

An AI research initiative is building a health and medicine benchmark, and you write or check its exam questions. You are assigned one of two task types:

  • Question authoring: writing original, hard multiple-choice questions in your area, rating their difficulty and submitting them for review
  • Question verification: reviewing questions others wrote for accuracy, clarity and rigour, editing where needed, rating difficulty and documenting your changes

Each question has one correct answer and nine plausible but subtly wrong alternatives, a step-by-step chain-of-thought solution in markdown, and 1–5 academic references from peer-reviewed journals or clinical guidelines. Questions must be self-contained, with every piece of information needed in the stem, and test conceptual understanding rather than recall. Difficulty is rated Medium (intro undergraduate), Hard (advanced undergraduate) or Expert (postgraduate and above).

Nine good distractors is the hard part. Anyone who has written board-style items knows that three or four credible wrong answers take real effort; nine that an expert solver cannot dismiss quickly means building each one around a specific, tempting misconception. Expect your first questions to take much longer than later ones.

Domains covered: clinical medicine and surgery, medical imaging and diagnostics, pharmacovigilance, healthcare management and economics, and rehabilitation and allied health.

Who fits

  • MD, DO, PhD or doctoral candidate in medicine, biomedical sciences, public health or a close field
  • A master's is considered for exceptional depth in a specific subdomain
  • Graduate-level medical knowledge, clinical reasoning and research methodology
  • Board certification, clinical experience or publications are a strong plus
  • Excellent written English

Doctoral candidates qualify, which makes this one of the better-paid options open to people still in training. Allied health and health economics backgrounds also have a genuine home here, since both are named domains.

What it pays

$94–119 per hour, for 10+ hours a week of asynchronous remote work. It sits well above the sister Applied Biology Benchmark Specialist listing ($60–75) for the same format. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise, as an independent contractor.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Strong rate with doctoral candidates eligible
  • Fully asynchronous and remote, no location requirement published
  • Broad domain list, including allied health, imaging and health economics
  • Very active: Mercor showed 60 hires this month when we checked

Less good:

  • Ten-option questions with references are slow to write well
  • You are assigned authoring or verification; the ad does not say you can choose
  • No task-level pay or throughput detail published
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported
  • Contractor engagement; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
