What you'll do
The architect's seat on Mercor's Vulcan construction evaluation project, paid identically to the Code Plan Reviewer (Plans Examiner) listing. Where the plans examiner reviews sets for compliance, this role works from the side that produces and coordinates them.
Each task begins with real drawings, documents and site photos and ends in the deliverable you would produce in practice: an RFI response, a coordination comment set or a marked-up set. You author the task and the correct answer, and a second reviewer in your discipline checks it before it ships.
Task types named in the ad:
- Architectural RFI response review and set QC checks
- Technical peer review, cross-sheet coordination and constructability review
- Redline back-checks, design change approval and addendum scoping
- As-built drawing production and pre-bid scope review
- Drawing-set document control and commissioning design review
- Shop drawing review for interiors, millwork and envelope details
The ad frames the difficulty precisely: answering the RFI is easy; knowing which cross-sheet conflict a rushed reviewer would sign off on is the job. So a good task hides the problem in how two or more sheets relate to each other.
Who fits
- You hold, or recently held, the seat that produces and coordinates permit and construction sets: architect of record, project architect, job captain or design coordination lead
- A licensed architect, or 8+ years as a project architect or job captain producing permit sets in lieu of a license
- 3+ years in the seat (8+ preferred), US based, working in US model code jurisdictions
- You can mark up drawing sets and details in Bluebeam Revu or equivalent
Standouts have run set QC or back-checks on others' drawings, mentored job captains, kept office standards or a detail library, or worked both sides of the RFI process.
Per the ad, probably not a fit: CAD or BIM drafters who did not author the set, renderers and visualization specialists, interior decorators, and PMs who coordinate schedules rather than drawings.
What it pays
$45–60 per hour depending on experience, with a stated path to a higher rate as the project scales. For a licensed architect that is modest; the appeal is flexible, remote work that uses coordination judgment directly. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise.
Worth knowing
Good:
- An unlicensed route exists for experienced job captains (8+ years)
- Every task is peer-reviewed by someone in your discipline
- A stated path to higher rates as the project grows
- Weekly payment on Stripe or Wise; remote and flexible
Less good:
- US residents only
- Modest rate relative to licensed architect pay
- Hours and project length are not published
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
- Independent contractor: projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
