What you'll do

This is the general intake for Mercor's chemistry red-team panel, covering the five profiles that also have their own listings. The panel checks whether frontier AI models judge the misuse potential of chemistry questions correctly: full answers for legitimate work, refusals for the genuinely dangerous.

The umbrella ad makes a point the individual listings only imply: the hard part is calibration. A benign prompt that a model wrongly refuses is as valuable a finding as an adversarial one it wrongly answers. In chemistry, Mercor puts the line between mechanism and procedure, understanding why something happens versus instructions for making it happen, and says only someone who has run the reaction knows exactly where it falls.

Each task:

  1. Write a single-turn prompt from your chemistry specialty, labelled benign, dual-use or adversarial
  2. Judge the model's response against a defined policy standard
  3. Write the reference answer, with the technical reasoning behind it

Who fits

Professionals with hands-on experience in synthesis, analytical chemistry or chemical safety. The five named backgrounds:

  • Chemical defence researcher (USAMRICD, DoD, CDC)
  • Synthetic or process chemist
  • Analytical chemist
  • Industrial hygienist or process safety engineer
  • Forensic or toxicological chemist

This ad is explicit that prior AI red-teaming or model evaluation experience is a plus but not required, which makes it slightly more open in tone than some of the role listings. The work is writing-intensive; include a sample or link to technical writing, published research or expert witness work.

Which listing to apply through

The ad does not say whether this listing shares a pool with the five role-specific ones. A close match to one role is probably best signalled through that listing; a mixed background (a process chemist who moved into industrial hygiene, say) may fit this general door better. Pay and terms are the same.

What it pays

$65–75 per task, Mercor's published figure and the same across the chemistry panel and Mercor's other domain red-team panels. No task length is stated. With 5 hires this month, this is the quietest of the four umbrella red-team listings.

The listing publishes no payment schedule or visa eligibility.

Before you apply

No classified or export-controlled information, and nothing under NDA or prepublication review. Declare any such obligations and Mercor says it will scope the work accordingly.

Mercor briefs experts before sustained work on misuse scenarios and lets you pause or step away without penalty.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Red-teaming experience explicitly not required
  • Clear statement that over-refusal findings are valued as much as harmful answers
  • No country restriction published

Less good:

  • Unclear how this listing relates to the role-specific ones
  • Per-task pay with no stated task length
  • Payment terms not on the listing
