What you'll do
Mercor is recruiting electrical design engineers for a short-term project with a leading technology organization. The ad frames the work as technical problem-solving, electrical design analysis and expert evaluation: you apply real design experience to analyze problems, check designs and judge engineering approaches.
The technical scope is broad and practical:
- Designing and reviewing distribution and power systems, control panels, switchgear and motor control
- Reading schematics, single-line and wiring diagrams, layouts and equipment specs
- Running calculations: load flow, voltage drop, short-circuit analysis, protection coordination and equipment sizing
- Weighing design alternatives and trade-offs, and spotting issues or improvements
- Validating designs, calculations and assumptions against requirements and standards
The ad does not mention AI directly, but "expert evaluation" on a Mercor project for a technology client almost always means producing and checking reference solutions that AI output is measured against. If you want certainty on that, ask during screening.
Who fits
- Electrical design engineer, electrical engineer or electrical design specialist with hands-on industry experience
- Bachelor's, master's or PhD in electrical engineering or a related field
- Practical design or evaluation work in industrial facilities, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, renewables, building services or energy storage
- Experience with low and medium-voltage systems, protection, equipment sizing and power distribution
- Tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, EPLAN or Revit are a plus
Preferred: an advanced degree or PE-type certification, power system studies, specifying transformers, switchgear, cables and motors, automation and instrumentation, data center or renewables design, familiarity with IEC, IEEE or NEC, and vendor submittal review. The ad does not state a minimum number of years.
What it pays
$70–85 per hour, Mercor's published band. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Duration is stated only as short-term; no hours are given.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Narrow, respectable band for engineering evaluation work
- Covers both building services and heavy industrial or utility-scale backgrounds
- No residence restriction published
- Weekly payment on Stripe or Wise; remote and flexible
Less good:
- Short-term project with no stated length or hours
- The end use (AI training) is implied rather than stated
- A degree in electrical engineering or related discipline is required
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
- Independent contractor: projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
