What you'll do
A leading technology company wants its models to get better at working inside Excel, and this listing is for the finance half of that effort. You bring the spreadsheets a PE associate, banker, hedge fund analyst or equity research analyst builds every week, and turn them into training material.
Responsibilities, in the ad's framing:
- Design realistic, domain-relevant Excel tasks drawn from your own professional experience, and write accurate, well-structured solutions
- Evaluate tasks and solutions, and give clear written feedback
- Guide research teams on where the model's Excel knowledge falls short in finance
- Work with other subject-matter experts to keep the training data consistent
The emphasis is on Excel as a finance tool rather than Excel in general. If your strength is breadth across industries rather than modelling depth, the sister Excel Expert: General listing pays the same and is the better fit.
Who fits
- Advanced professional Excel: XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, dynamic arrays, PivotTables, dashboards, Power Query, Power Pivot, and macros/VBA
- Hands-on finance modelling in private equity, investment banking, hedge funds or equity research (accounting and FP&A are also considered): three-statement models, LBO and DCF valuation, forecasting
- Demonstrable career progression
- Prior AI training, annotation or model evaluation experience is a strong plus, ideally Rubrics-trained on Mercor or a similar platform
- United States-based only
No minimum years are stated, which is unusual for a $70–100 finance role; career progression and the Excel toolkit do the filtering.
Hours and employment
Here the listing contradicts itself. The body describes a W-2 employment position with Cincinnatus LLC, a staffing company that acts as employer of record (payroll, benefits, compliance) and places people with the tech client. The standard Mercor footer on the same page describes an independent contractor engagement paid weekly via Stripe or Wise, and excludes H-1B and STEM OPT candidates. Confirm which applies before you accept, because tax treatment and benefits differ completely.
The commitment is also front-loaded: 40 hours a week on weekdays through the end of September, then 20 hours a week after that. The listing was checked on 24 September, so the full-time stretch is almost over; ask what the schedule looks like from here.
What it pays
$70–100 per hour. The ad does not say what places you within the band. It is the same range as the General variant.
Worth knowing
Good:
- W-2 status, if confirmed, brings benefits that Mercor contract work does not
- No stated years minimum
- Uses modelling skill directly rather than asking you to grade prose
- Finance generalists across PE, IB, hedge funds and ER all qualify
Less good:
- US only
- Conflicting W-2 and contractor terms on the same listing
- The 40-hour phase leaves little room for a day job
- The tech client is not named
