What you'll do
This is the generalist half of the same Excel training program as Excel Expert: Finance. The finance listing wants modellers from PE, banking and research. This one wants the opposite profile: people who have used Excel at an expert level across several industries and business functions, rather than going deep in one.
Think operations analysts who moved into marketing analytics, consultants who built dashboards for a dozen clients, or the person every department called when a workbook broke. The tasks you design come from that breadth.
Per the ad you will:
- Design realistic Excel tasks drawn from your professional experience and write accurate, well-structured solutions
- Evaluate tasks and solutions and give clear written feedback
- Guide research teams on where the model's Excel performance falls short across domains
- Work with other subject-matter experts to keep training data consistent
Who fits
- Advanced professional Excel: XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, dynamic arrays, PivotTables, data modelling, dashboards, Power Query, Power Pivot and macros/VBA
- Demonstrable career progression
- Strong pluses: breadth across industries and functions; teaching or training experience and/or a PhD; prior AI training, annotation or evaluation work, ideally Rubrics-trained on Mercor or a similar platform
- United States-based only
The teaching and PhD pluses are distinctive to this variant. Excel trainers and academics who use spreadsheets heavily in research are a natural fit here in a way they are not for the finance listing.
Hours and employment
As with its finance sibling, the ad is inconsistent. The body describes a W-2 employment position with Cincinnatus LLC, the employer of record that places staff with the tech client, while the Mercor footer on the same page describes an independent contractor role paid weekly via Stripe or Wise and excludes H-1B and STEM OPT candidates. Get this confirmed in writing before starting.
The schedule is 40 hours a week on weekdays through the end of September, then 20 hours a week. We checked the listing on 24 September, so only a few days of the full-time stretch remain.
What it pays
$70–100 per hour, identical to the finance variant. The ad gives no basis for placement within the band.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Breadth across industries is rewarded
- Teachers and PhDs get explicit credit
- Potential W-2 benefits, if that is the arrangement that applies
- No stated years minimum
Less good:
- US only
- W-2 versus contractor terms are contradictory on the listing
- Heavy near-term hours
- The client company is not named
