What you'll do

Mercor is working with a leading AI lab to train frontier models on insurance reasoning, and this listing is the actuarial seat. The work combines two things actuaries rarely get paid to do together: build the problem, then mark somebody else's answer to it.

On the building side you design realistic scenarios in ratemaking, loss reserving, valuation, experience studies, assumption-setting and profitability analysis, and create the supporting work products: pricing models, reserve reviews, actuarial memoranda, assumption documents and results summaries. You also write "golden" reference answers at the level of an experienced actuary.

On the grading side you score AI responses against structured rubrics for methodological soundness, calculation accuracy, justified assumptions and clear communication, and call out flawed methods, arithmetic errors and undocumented rationale. Your written feedback goes to the research team. Onboarding office hours and calibration sessions are part of the job.

Every practice area is welcome: life, health, P&C, pensions and retirement, and enterprise risk, whether you sit at an insurer, a reinsurer, a consultancy or a corporate actuarial team.

Who fits

  • 2+ years of professional actuarial experience in any practice area
  • An understanding of how methods, assumptions and data drive pricing, reserves and valuation
  • The ability to pick a method, run it, and defend the conclusion in writing
  • A clear sense of where actuarial analysis ends and underwriting decisions or formal financial or legal advice begin

Bonus, not required: ASA, FSA, ACAS, FCAS, CERA, MAAA or a comparable credential, including candidates still sitting exams; multi-line or reinsurance, capital modeling or ERM experience; R, Python, SAS, SQL or actuarial software such as Prophet, Emblem, Radar or ResQ; and regulatory filings, rate filings or statements of actuarial opinion.

The 2-year bar is notably low for actuarial expert work, which makes this a realistic option for exam-track actuaries who have not yet qualified.

What it pays

A flat $80 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. The same rate as the Insurance Underwriting Specialists sister role, and well above the $50–60 band on Mercor's broader Insurance Experts listing.

Commitment

Minimum 20 hours a week, ideally 40 or more. The role starts immediately and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. At 20 hours this is a serious side commitment; at 40 it is effectively a full-time contract.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Low entry bar for an $80 rate, and credentials are optional
  • All practice areas welcome, including pensions and ERM
  • Very active: Mercor showed 96 hires on this listing this month
  • Calibration sessions build a shared standard before you grade (the ad does not say whether they are paid)

Less good:

  • The 20-hour floor rules out a light side gig
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
  • Contractor terms; projects can be extended, shortened or concluded early
  • The AI lab is not named
