What you'll do
This is the underwriting counterpart to Mercor's actuarial listing for the same AI lab project. Where the actuaries focus on methods and reserves, underwriters here teach models to read a risk and a policy the way a working underwriter does.
You design scenarios around risk selection, exposure analysis, policy terms and conditions, exclusions, endorsements, pricing and coverage determinations. For each, you build the documents an underwriting desk would produce: the decision itself, a risk assessment, a rating and pricing rationale, a coverage analysis or a referral write-up. You also write golden reference answers at experienced-underwriter quality.
Then you grade AI responses against structured rubrics covering risk-selection accuracy, interpretation of provisions, pricing correctness and overall judgment. The ad singles out the errors to catch: misread policy language, wrong risk classifications, bad rating arithmetic and thin documentation. Written feedback goes to the research team, and onboarding office hours and calibration sessions are part of the process.
Every line is welcome: life, health, property, casualty, commercial, personal, specialty, marine, surety and reinsurance, from carriers, MGAs or reinsurers.
Who fits
- 2+ years in insurance underwriting, any line
- A working grasp of how provisions, exclusions, endorsements and rating factors decide coverage and price
- The ability to weigh risk, exposure and financial evidence and defend the decision in writing
- A clear line between an underwriting decision, an agent's sales recommendation and legal advice
Bonus: CPCU, CLU, AINS, ARM, AU, FALU or a comparable credential; multi-line or specialty experience; treaty or facultative reinsurance; actuarial, pricing or catastrophe-modeling exposure; regulatory filings, compliance or audit review.
Marine and surety underwriters are named explicitly, which is unusual; niche lines often get left out of these projects.
What it pays
A flat $80 per hour, identical to the actuarial sister role, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise.
Commitment
At least 20 hours a week, ideally 40 or more. Starts immediately, with rolling review of applications.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Two years is enough, and credentials are only a bonus
- Specialty lines, MGAs and reinsurers explicitly welcome
- Same rate as the actuarial seat, so underwriting judgment is valued on par
Less good:
- The 20-hour minimum is substantial
- Unlike its actuarial sibling, the listing showed no hiring count when we checked, so volume is unknown
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
- Contractor terms; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
