What you'll do
A leading AI research lab wants to know where its models break on real oncology, and it is paying oncologists to find out. The focus is narrower than general medicine: clinical trial design, patient eligibility and treatment decision-making.
The work has two halves:
- Building the test: writing realistic, nuanced oncology tasks and scenarios, particularly around trials, designed to expose weak spots in frontier model answers
- Grading the answer: checking AI clinical reasoning for accuracy, completeness and fit with current standard-of-care guidelines; catching flawed logic, missed diagnoses, thin treatment rationale and unsafe recommendations; and writing your own structured expert answer with step-by-step reasoning that reflects how you actually decide
The ad does not spell out the craft involved. A good adversarial case is one where the model's answer sounds right to a generalist and is wrong to an oncologist: an eligibility criterion that quietly excludes the patient, a line of therapy that was standard two years ago. Writing those well rewards people who sit on trial committees or screen patients for studies.
Who fits
- MD or DO currently in, or finished with, a fellowship in medical oncology or hematology/oncology
- Practising in the United States and seeing oncology patients now, or within the past three years
- 3+ years of post-residency experience strongly preferred
- Clear, precise written clinical reasoning
The ad says a strong fit meets "most or all" of these, and current fellows are explicitly eligible, which is unusual for a rate this high.
What it pays
$350–450 per hour, among the highest rates Mercor publishes for clinical AI work and well above the $150–230 disease-area clinician role. The ad does not say what sets your rate within the band, or how many hours are available.
Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise, and you are engaged as an independent contractor. Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Exceptional hourly rate
- Fellows in medical oncology or hem/onc can apply
- Recently practising oncologists (within three years) qualify
- Trial-focused work that suits investigators and research-active clinicians
- Remote, on your own schedule
Less good:
- Described as short-term; extension depends on performance
- No weekly hours, minimum commitment or project length published
- US practice required; H-1B and STEM OPT holders excluded
- The lab is not named
- Contractor engagement; projects can be shortened or ended early
About this listing
